This Overpowered Skeleton Watch Is a Blend of Two Luxury Masterpieces, With an Additional Hidden Trick

What started as an integrated steel sports watch has grown into a robust collection that includes all of the significant complications horology has to offer, except for one.

That is, until now, as Vacheron Constantin introduces the most elaborate trick a mechanical watch can perform to the Overseas collection: a minute repeater.

As if that weren’t impressive enough, the new Overseas Grand Complication Openface also includes a perpetual calendar and a tourbillon, two features previously only available in separate members of the Overseas family.

It is powered by one of Vacheron Constantin’s most impressive movements, the hand-wound caliber 2755 QP.

Even though this masterwork of watchmaking has been employed since 2010, it has never put on better show than it does in the sleek, angular Overseas case.

The grandest of complications

To put into perspective how impressive the caliber 2755 QP movement is, with 602 components packed into a 33.3mm diameter space, all of the mechanics visible on top of the dial are just window dressing compared to the minute repeater sunken below.

For those who aren’t aware, a minute repeater is an analog watch complication that announces the time through chimes, much like a grandfather clock or church tower, when triggered. In this case, by a bumper at eight o’clock.

That last detail complicates things immensely because traditional chiming clocks announce the time continuously. However, keeping track of the time and only chiming when engaged requires a migraine-inducing complexity of gears and levers.

The perpetual calendar is displayed on three sub-dials, with the month at twelve o’clock, the date at three o’clock and the day at nine o’clock.

The tourbillon escapement is displayed where the moonphase window has lived on previous Overseas Perpetual Calendar references.

The hand-finished brushing and polishing, rhodium-plated wheels and NAC treatment of the movement are visible on both sides through sapphire glass.

Appearing to float on top, the hands and applied hour markers are plated with white gold for a uniquely lustrous finish.

An Overseas, nonetheless

Housing all that majestic clockwork is Vacheron Constantin’s distinctive Overseas case, executed in grade five titanium with a bead-blasted satin finish.

Three integrated bracelet options are provided with the watch in matching titanium, rubber and blue alligator leather.

The most impressive feature of the case is its modest water resistance of 30m. Compared to the standard Overseas design, which has 150m water resistance, this sounds disappointing, but achieving any meaningful moisture prevention with the case-compromising minute repeater trigger is extremely impressive.

The Overseas has long been a fan favorite and an IFYKYK gem among integrated steel sports watches. Now that it is outfitted with one of Vacheron Constantin’s most impressive movements, the sporty luxury watch has reached its highest form.
