Despite being founded only a decade ago, Italian microbrand Unimatic has fast become a go-to source for rugged and affordable tool watches, thanks in part to the brand’s unique hyper-minimalist design aesthetic.

But sometimes, Unimatic’s modern sensibilities can get in the way of a watch’s practicality. After all, a dive bezel without any markings isn’t the most useful when it comes to timing events.

So if you’ve been wishing for a Unimatic watch that incorporates more of the stylish flair and practical utility of vintage tool watches while still looking like a Unimatic, then the brand’s new Diving Heritage Collection has just the watch, or rather, watches, for you.

A Tool Watch for Every Occasion

Unimatic’s new collection features three different models, each filling the role of one of the “Big Three” tool watches. There’s a standard dive watch, a GMT and a chronograph.

The diver and GMT both use the brand’s standard Modello Uno case, while the chronograph uses its Modello Tre case. All cases are in brushed stainless steel and measure 40mm across and 41.5mm at the bezel, and all bezels are 120-click unidirectional with a coin edge. Each case is water-resistant to 300m with a screw-down caseback featuring the same mid-century diver-inspired insignia.

Most notable is that the watches feature the same low-key vintage-inspired styling cues that differentiate them from the rest of Unimatic’s catalog.

All three models are available in three different dial colors inspired by the appearance of aged vintage dials.

There’s matte black, tropic brown and vintage navy, with each dial being paired with a matching quick-release two-piece TPU strap. Each style also features a matte black aluminum bezel insert with gilt markings and a luminescent pearl. The lume pip and the dial markings all feature Super-LumiNova GL “light old radium,” which gives a creamy, subtly aged look without going too overboard into fauxtina territory.

Where the watches differ is in their functionality and movements — though all three are powered by Seiko calibers that are extremely popular within the microbrand space.

The Heritage Diver is the simplest of the trio and uses the Cal. NH35A automatic. The Heritage GMT Diver is powered by the venerable Cal. NH34A automatic, first introduced in the Seiko 5 Sports GMT. Lastly, the Heritage Chronograph Diver utilizes the Cal. VK64A, which is a meca-quartz chronograph.

Pricing and Availability

Through its dozens of limited-edition releases, Unimatic has proven time and again that its signature minimalist design style is a surprisingly versatile canvas for experimentation, and it’s arguably never looked better than with this new collection. Who would’ve thought that modern Italian minimalism would mesh so perfectly with heritage dive watch traits?

The Diving Heritage Collection is limited, with each of the nine references (three models in three colors) being limited to 300 pieces each. The Heritage Diver and Heritage Chronograph Diver are priced the lowest at €625 (~$735) each, followed by the Heritage GMT Diver at €892.50 (~$1,050).
