When you look at the ongoing Timex renaissance, a couple of models stand out as the most representative of the American legacy brand’s reborn popularity. There’s the ’70s-inspired Q, which embraced Timex’s history with affordable quartz technology and packaged it in an attractive retro package that proved to be catnip for enthusiasts. Then there’s the Giorgio Galli line: stunning, modern, higher-quality automatics named for and designed by the brand’s Italian creative director.

But the new Timex’s story really began with the reissue of the Marlin back in 2017. A faithful recreation of a 1960s Timex, the handsome and stylish watch rode the wave of vintage nostalgia that has had an iron grip on the watch industry for the past decade while also featuring Timex’s first mechanical movement in decades. Since then, Timex has continued to build out the Marlin collection with hand-crankers and automatics — including a number of popular Snoopy variants. Today, the brand returns to the Marlin’s roots — sort of — with a new interpretation of 1960s style via the space age-inspired Marlin Jet.

Timex Marlin Jet Automatic

The Marlin Jet isn’t a reissue of a vintage Timex like other Marlins. Instead, it draws broad inspiration from mid-century space-age design and incorporates some interesting design quirks as a result. Most notably is the large hesalite crystal that encapsulates the entire bezel, making for a visually interesting case — especially for the price.

1960s Style Through a 2024 Lens

Unlike the original Marlin reissue, the Marlin Jet is not a modern version of a vintage Timex watch. It’s actually a brand-new design, but one created using the design ethos of the mid-century. These retro design cues include a compact and streamlined case measuring 38mm across, a concave crosshair dial, applied onyx-filled baton indices that cut into the dial with matching baton hands and a repeating pattern of concentric circles repeating throughout the watch that recalls mid-century modernism.

But the most striking thing about the watch has to be the way the crystal has been incorporated into the case. Timex went with a domed Hesalite crystal like you’d find on watches of the era the watch emulates, but the crystal extends past the dial to incorporate the entire bezel. We saw this technique employed to great effect with sapphire last year with TAG Heuer’s Carrera “Glassbox” — one of our favorite watches of 2023 — and it’s just as stunning here. Under the edges of the bulbous, you can make out the concentric grooves in the bezel along with a “Marlin” nameplate at six o’clock, with the design echoing 1960s aircraft design.

Slightly more modern touches include the 24-hour subdial at 9 o’clock, an exhibition window on the caseback for viewing the automatic movement and the included blue Perlon woven strap. Taken as a whole, the Marlin Jet might just be the best-looking Marlin to date, with that unique crystal and fast-looking case making for a compelling vessel. With that combo as a new base, I’m looking forward to seeing what other dial configurations Timex comes up with in future versions of the Marlin Jet.

You Can Only Buy the Marlin Jet Online … When It Isn’t Sold Out

If you’re planning to check out a Marlin Jet at your local Timex retailer, you’re out of luck. Timex is doing the opposite of the Swatch strategy by releasing the Marlin Jet exclusively online through the Timex online store, where it costs just $289. Naturally, this combination of killer style, convenient shopping and a low price made the Marlin Jet sell out in a flash. Almost as soon as the watch appeared on the site, it was gone. The good news is it’s not a limited edition, so keep checking back and maybe you’ll get lucky.
