Timex has been making field watches for generations, and the brand has poured all of its accrued experience into the Expedition North Titanium.

It is the ultimate affordable automatic field watch, and right now, it is only $202 on Amazon.

That’s right, one of the best-designed field watches out there, with an automatic movement from Citizen’s subsidiary Miyota and a full titanium case, costs less than most plastic quartz watches.

Don’t ask why. It doesn’t matter. What matters is how great this watch is.

Reinventing a classic

Timex offers a classic WWII-era field watch in the MK-1, but the Expedition modernizes the design for improved real-world performance.

The bead blasted 41mm titanium case weighs only 8.8 ounces. It has a large crown guard and an exhibition case back branded with the Expedition North logo.

The dial blends an old-school railroad minutes track and painted rounded Arabic numeral hour markers with broad minute and hour hands designed to optimize legibility.

Set against a grainy matte black dial to enhance legibility through contrast, the indices and hands are coated with Super-LumiNova C3 lume for low-light visibility.

Timex doesn’t disclose up-front what movements it uses, but it is public knowledge that most of the American brand’s automatic watches are powered by Miyota.

In this case, it is visible through the exhibition case back that the Expedition North Titanium likely uses a Miyota caliber 8215. This reliable workhorse is easy to service and runs for 42 hours when fully wound.

A model of versatility

The Expedition North Titanium’s real strength is its versatility. Its simple look lends itself to everyday wear and can be spiced up with any number of additional straps.

Timex provides a black leather pin-buckle strap with quick-release pins. This can be quickly and easily swapped out for a nylon NATO strap to make the featherweight field watch even lighter and more comfortable.
