Watches like the Rolex Submariner and Omega Speedmaster tend to spring to mind when we think of iconic watches, but a watch needn’t be expensive to be considered iconic. Just take a look at the Timex Ironman.

Initially created in the 1980s to meet the needs of Triathletes, the Ironman — whose name is part of a licensing agreement with the Ironman Triathlon — has been regarded as a rugged and affordable digital watch for four decades.

The watch reached iconic status in the 1990s thanks in part to the time it spent on the wrist of President Bill Clinton, where the athlete-aimed Ironman became a symbol of the everyman thanks to its low cost and function-first design.

We’ve seen a number of takes on the Ironman over the years, including a colorful retro collab between Timex and The James Brand last year, but now Japanese clothing brand Beams has given the watch a full-metal makeover, creating what is likely the most premium version of the icon yet.

The Timex Ironman finally lives up to its name

OK, so the new collab isn’t actually made of iron, but the name “Ironman” certainly feels more fitting on a metal watch.

The Timex x Beams Ironman 8-Lap Metal swaps out the plastic parts of the original for stainless steel, which is used for the case, bezel and bracelet of the new watch.

The bracelet is surprisingly intricate and dressy, sporting a tapering, seven-link design with the two outermost links brushed and the rest polished. It’s quite attractive and really elevates the look of the watch.

Beneath the (very) shiny exterior lies all the same functionality and toughness you’d expect from a Timex Ironman.

Inside, it’s still the classic Ironman

The exterior of the Beams collab may be shiny and new, but inside, it’s the same dependable Ironman that athletes have relied on for over a generation.

The quartz movement features a chronograph, various timers, an alarm, a calendar and the signature 8-lap measuring function. As usual, the complications are activated via five buttons on the case, including the Indiglo illuminator at 2 o’clock.

Like the classic Timex Ironman, the watch is water resistant down to 100m, but the crystal has been upgraded. Instead of the standard acrylic, it is now made of more impact-resistant mineral glass.

Pricing and Availability

Timex has been on a bit of a collab tear over the past few years (see its recent titanium automatic GMT with The James Brand), and I expect the Timex x Beams Ironman 8-Lap Metal to sell out in a flash.

But if you’re not in Japan, you may have a hard time getting your hands on one. The watch is being sold exclusively through Beams Japan for the Japanese market, where it’s priced at ¥69,850 (~$448). It’s available for pre-order now and officially goes on sale on Friday, June 28.

A more premium reimagining of Timex’s iconic Ironman watch from the mid-1980s, Japanese clothing designer Beams has swapped out the digital watch’s plastic case, bezel and strap for stainless steel.
