Welcome to Talking Points, a series that looks at what makes certain products worth talking about, brought to you by Gear Patrol Studios.

Distinction in watch design is all about detailing and provenance. The nuance of both makes it hard for watches to stand out, especially more affordable options designed for daily wear.

Bulova’s new Super Seville is a rare exception that nods to the past while still feeling fresh.

Building on 50 years of design provenance

It’s no wonder that a quartz-powered watch with a distinctive TV-shaped face first appeared in the 1970s.

It was when quartz movement technology finally became mainstream, and brands like Bulova stood at the forefront of mastering the technology’s incredible timekeeping precision.

Television was also reaching new tiers of cultural ubiquity. Color-capable TV sets and full-color broadcasts were both introduced, alongside now-iconic shows like Monday Night Football, The Price is Right, SNL, Good Morning America, and Wheel of Fortune. It was also the era of entirely new TV networks, including HBO and ESPN.

A timepiece where retro meets state-of-the-art

The new version of the Super Seville is everything a well-executed reissue should be.

It retains all of the right classic details, including vertically brushed dial treatments, a date window magnifier, an integrated tapered three-link bracelet, a polished fluted bezel, and a versatile 38 mm size.

But it’s also now powered by Bulova’s incredible Precisionist movement. Its 8-jewel quartz mechanism vibrates eight times faster than typical quartz movements, adding a super smooth sweeping motion to the second hand. It’s also remarkably accurate to within seconds a year and more resistant to disruption from significant temperature swings.

There’s really nothing quite like it

The Super Seville’s unique case shape and traditional detailing are unlike anything else on the market, especially for the price.

We also appreciate how the different available color options play with these balance points. The blue and green dial colors on stainless steel are slightly more modern, while the silver-white dial with gold-tone stainless steel leans even more classic.

The result is a watch that manages to be the best of both worlds: familiar and unique, accurate and affordable, tasteful yet interesting.
