NFL players tend to be young, stylish and very, very rich. So it’s unsurprising that many of them have enviable collections of expensive watches. With Super Bowl LVIII right around the corner, I thought it would be fun to take a look at the watches worn by the top players on the defending champion Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers.

Below, you’ll see watches worn by players like Patrick Mahomes, Christian McCaffrey and other stars. I can’t say it’s the most diverse selection of watches I’ve ever come across — Rolex tends to dominate, and some players choose to ice-out their watches with an inordinate amount of diamonds — but there are a couple of surprises sprinkled throughout to keep things interesting.

Products in the Guide

Kansas City Chiefs

Patrick Mahomes, Quarterback

As the consensus best player in the NFL today, it’s not surprising to find out that Mahomes as a killer watch collection. He seems to favor Rolex, owning at least a platinum Day-Date, a GMT-Master II “Batgirl” and a diamond-dial Yacht-Master in Everose Gold. But the pinnacle of his collection has to be his “Rainbow” Daytona, seen above, one of the most legendary — or notorious, depending on whom you ask — Rolexes ever made.

Rolex

Rolex “Rainbow” Daytona

Arguably the wildest, most polarizing watch every created by Rolex, the (now-discontinued) Rainbow Daytona in full gold features diamond indices, 36 rainbow-colored sapphires in the bezel and 56 diamonds set into the case and along the lugs.

Pros

  • As over-the-top as a Rolex can get
  • The ultimate "flex" watch

Cons

  • Some find it garish
  • Absolutely insane prices and rarity

Travis Kelce, Tight End

Mahomes’ favorite target is another Rolex fan — I couldn’t find photos of him wearing anything else. Occasionally, he’ll wear a Submariner, but most of the time, he’s alternating between his yellow gold and platinum Day-Dates, the latter of which is seen above. Maybe Taylor Swift will buy him a new watch if he wins on Sunday.

Rolex

Rolex Day-Date 40

Nicknamed “The President” thanks to its long association with world leaders, the Day-Date — which is only available in precious metals like gold and platinum — remains the ultimate status symbol watch for many.

Specs

Case Size 40mm
Movement Rolex 3255 automatic calendar
Water Resistance 100m

Pros

  • A beautiful, classic design
  • 40mm sizing works well for larger wrists

Cons

  • Heavy
  • Expensive and exclusive

Chris Jones, Defensive Tackle

The anchor of the Chiefs’ defensive line is also holding it down off the field when it comes to the team’s watch collection, as his pieces tend to be a bit more unexpected than others. “Stone Cold” has at least three Audemars Piguet Royal Oaks, a Royal Oak Offshore Chronograph and a yellow gold Rolex Day-Date. But most interesting to me is the Patek Nautilus in rose gold on a leather strap, reference 5980R-001, that he wore to the White House.

Watchbox

Patek Philippe Nautilus Chronograph ref. 5980R-001

A unique take on the classic Nautilus form, this version features a rose gold case, a leather strap and a chronograph movement featuring a single large mono-counter register at six o’clock.

Specs

Case Size 40m
Movement Patek Philippe CH 28-520 C automatic chronogaph
Water Resistance 120m

Pros

  • Not your everyday Nautilus
  • Unique layout for a chronograph

Cons

  • Chronograph is hard to read
  • Costs six figures

Creed Humphrey, Center

The Chiefs’ center is a humble guy, and that’s clear from his watch collection. The only watch I’ve caught him wearing recently is a TAG Heuer two-tone Formula One, a quartz-powered watch — currently discontinued — that retailed for just $2,400.

TAG Huer

TAG Heuer Formula 1 Quartz Two-Tone

A two-tone version of TAG Heuer’s entry-level quartz sports watch, the time-and-date Formula One brings motorsports vibes in an affordable package.

Specs

Case Size 41mm
Movement Swiss quartz
Water Resistance 100m

Pros

  • Entry point to a great brand in TAG Heuer
  • Solid motorsports-inspired styling

Cons

  • Lots of better watches out there for the money
  • Two-tone design looks a little cheap

San Francisco 49ers

Christian McCaffrey, Running Back

McCaffrey was arguably the best offensive player in the NFL this past season, leading the league in both rushing yards and yards from scrimmage (he racked up 2,023 yards for the latter). Off the field, he tends to wear just one watch, and just like McCaffrey when he runs the ball, it’s also hard to get your hands on. The running back’s watch is the modern Rolex Daytona Panda in stainless steel, one of the hottest watches on the market for the past several years.

Rolex

Rolex Cosmograph Daytona

One of the most iconic and in-demand watches in existence, you should consider yourself lucky if you’re able to get your hands on a panda-dial Daytona in stainless steel.

Specs

Case Size 40mm
Movement Rolex Cal. 4131 automatic chronograph
Water Resistance 100m

Pros

  • A bona fide icon
  • Timeless, beautiful design

Cons

  • Nearly impossible to get
  • Massively inflated prices on the secondary market

George Kittle, Tight End

Kittle is basically Travis Kelce but with a less famous girlfriend. They both have over-the-top goofy personalities, opt for wild fashion looks and are extremely skilled receivers. One of the biggest differences between them, however, lies in their choice of timepieces. Kittle eschews Rolex and other pricey picks for the humble yet classic Casio Calculator Databank. Respect.

Amazon

Casio Gold Tone Memory Calculator Databank Watch

A classic for its retro nerdy vibes, Casio’s ’80s-riffic Calculator watch — which can also store data like phone numbers — is a useful conversation piece that can be had for well under a hundred bucks.

Specs

Case Size 46.5mm × 33.1mm
Movement Casio Module 3228 quartz alarm, calendar, chronograph, calculator, databank
Water Resistance 200m

Pros

  • Crazy affordable
  • A fun conversation piece

Cons

  • Gimmicky in the smartphone/smart watch era
  • Definitely doesn't go with everything

Deebo Samuel, Wide Receiver

Then on the other side of the spectrum, there’s Deebo. Number-one wide receivers have historically been a flashy bunch — think of guys like Chad Ochocinco and Odell Beckham Jr (who once wore a Richard Mille in a game) — and Samuel is no exception. Scroll to the last slide in his post above and you’ll get a glimpse of his collection, consisting of a trio of Royal Oaks, a pair Cartier Santos watches, a Daytona on an Oysterflex strap, a Rolesor Rolex Datejust and a Richard Mille RM 030 with a declutchable rotor. Maybe he’ll wear that one on the field during the big game.

Richard Mille

Richard Mille RM 030

Released in 2011, this skeletonized watch features the type of innovation we’ve expect from Richard Mille. The movement features an automatic declutching mechanism that kicks in when the power reserve is full, keeping the rotor from winding until the reserve drops down a further ten hours, thus preventing needless wear.

Specs

Case Size 42.7mm x 50mm
Movement Richard Mille RMAR1 automatic
Water Resistance 50m

Pros

  • Unique declutching rotor prevents wear and tear
  • Subdued styling (for a Richard Mille)

Cons

  • Massive
  • Costs six figures

Trent Williams, Offensive Tackle

The Pro Bowl offensive lineman is both a big guy and a big watch guy. He owns a couple of Rolex Sky-Dwellers, including the custom iced-out version he’s wearing for his birthday in the above post (he also appears to own a less ostentatious yellow gold/Oysterflex version). Custom iced-out watches appear throughout his collection in the form of diamond-encrusted Audmars Piguets and Richard Milles, along with standard models like a yellow gold Rolex Day-Date and a Richard Mille RM 011-01. He’s also contributed to his teammates’ collections by gifting Deebo Samuel a Rolex GMT-Master “Starbucks.”

Rolex

Rolex Sky-Dweller

One of Rolex’s most unique and underrated models, the Sky-Dweller bridges the gap between its sporty “Professional” and dressy “Classic” collections. The unique movement functions both as a GMT and an annual calendar, while the white gold fluted bezel adds a touch of class.

Specs

Case Size 42mm
Movement Rolex 9002 automatic GMT annual calendar
Water Resistance 100m

Pros

  • The perfect "if you know, you know" Rolex
  • Interesting and innovative movement

Cons

  • A touch big at 42mm
  • Difficult to get
