Homage watches — that is, affordable watches designed to look like popular watches that cost much more — are a controversial subject within the watch enthusiast community. Some view them as an accessible way for less affluent collectors to get an iconic look on their wrist, while others view them as cheap imitations or downright design theft.

However you feel about homage watches, the Sinn 903 is not an homage watch. The reason why the watch looks like a Breitling Navitimer is because Sinn owns that design. During the Quartz Crisis in the 1970s, Breitling fell on hard times like many other Swiss watch brands and was forced to sell off some of its assets. Those assets included the design of its iconic Navitimer, the rights of which were sold to Sinn to produce its own version.

That version became the 903 St chronograph, a beloved model from the German tool watch brand that has long ranked as the best affordable — and legitimate — way to get the Navitimer’s iconic slide rule bezel design on your wrist. Now, Sinn has released a brand new version of the watch called the 903 St II that might just make it even more appealing than an actual Navitimer while still only costing well under half the price.

This Sequel Is Better Than the Original

The Sinn 903 St II makes some pretty significant upgrades over the outgoing 903 St. First and foremost, the 11 o’clock crown of the previous generation has been jettisoned, resulting in a more streamlined 41mm case that now bears even more of a resemblance to the Breitling. It also means that the slide rule bezel is now externally operable like on the Breitling, whereas before it could only be manipulated by that 11 o’clock crown.

One advantage the 903 St had long held over the Navitimer was in the realm of water resistance, where the Sinn’s 100m rating trounced the Breitling’s notoriously paltry 30m rating. With the 903 St II, the delta between the two brands’ aquatic capabilities grows even further, as the new version of the Sinn chronograph boasts a very impressive 200m water resistance rating along with a screw-down crown. There aren’t many logarithmic slide rule pilot’s chronographs out there with as much water resistance as your average dive watch, but the 903 ST II is one of them.

The final big updates are found on the dial. The painted indices have been replaced by solid blocks of ceramic lume. It’s unclear which treatment Sinn is using — Lumicast and Globolight are two popular brands making such indices — but it’s a trend I’ve seen gaining steam lately among several brands, and the application results in lume that’s brighter and lasts longer. The indices are hand-applied, too, and there’s also a new applied metal Sinn logo under 12 o’clock that really ups the luxury vibes.

Pricing and Availability

The Sinn 903 St II is available on a five-link bracelet or you can choose from a wide variety of straps in different materials and colors, though stitched leather would be the most classic choice. The new watch comes in three colors: dark blue, black sunburst, and a pretty sky blue sunburst that’s limited to 500 pieces.

As before, the new 903 is powered by the Swiss-made La Joux-Perret L110 automatic column-wheel chronograph movement, which has a 60-hour power reserve and is visible through a sapphire caseback. The exception is the sky blue version, which is powered by the L112 caliber, essentially the same movement but without the date.

The watches, like all Sinns (and some other German brands), are available online through retailer WatchBuys. And, as usual, they’re a whole lot cheaper than a Breitling. The 903 St II starts at $3,730 on a leather strap and tops out at $4,170 for the limited-edition version on a bracelet (the non-limited bracelet versions cost $3,970). Given that the current retail price for a Navitimer B01 Chronograph 41 starts at $9,450, I’d say the Sinn represents quite the bargain.

Sinn 903 ST II

For 2024, Sinn upgraded its cult-favorite, officially sanctioned Navitimer clone with a more streamlined case that ditches the crown at 11 o’clock while adding fresh colors, a more refined dial with applied indices and logo, and twice as much water resistance as before.
