Less than a week after releasing six new Speedtimer references, Seiko is adding one more watch to the Prospex collection, and it is a beauty.

This time, it is a limited-edition Alpinist inspired by a mountainous twilight sky.

The new Prospex Alpinist SPB531 ‘Night Sky’ is strictly a visual update, adding a stunning new dial texture and rose gold tone to the time-tested design.

It includes an inner rotating compass bezel controlled by the crown at four o’clock, which has been omitted from some Alpinist references over the past few years.

It also comes with two straps that play up the elevated field watch’s well-established ability to handle double duty as a dress watch.

Notably, Seiko chose to stick with the same caliber 6R35 movement that has been in the Alpinist series since it was looped into the Prospex collection. Meanwhile, the new time-and-date Speedtimer design, which also has an inner rotating bezel, received the updated caliber 6R55 movement.

Alpine twilight

The centerpiece of this update is the gray-blue dial color with faint vertical brushing. It is inspired by the color of the sky as night first falls over the mountains, when the sun’s orange twilight glow is still visible long after it has dropped below the horizon.

We’ve seen radial brushing, fumé fades and the trademark glossy green, but this is a new texture for the Alpinist line.

This texture is evidence that the Prospex team developed this Alpinist alongside the new time-and-date Speedtimer design because it appears on those watches as well, in creamy white and faded gray.

The seconds hand is faux rose gold, which mimics the golden glow of the horizon during long mountain sunsets.

The rest of the dial retains the same basic format established when Seiko revived the Alpinist in 1995. It has alternating numeral and triangle applied hour markers, a cyclops date window, lume-filled cathedral hands and a railroad seconds and minutes track with lume dots for the hours.

Get you a watch that can do both

Since Seiko ditched the Alpinist’s clunky egg-shaped cathedral hour hand for a fountain pen shape in 2007, it has walked the line between field watch and dress watch.

This broad appeal has earned the versatile tool watch some of the most loyal fans of any design in the Seiko pantheon.

The SPB531 ‘Night Sky’ acknowledges this dual role by coming equipped with two straps. One is a blue embossed leather strap with a steel folding clasp, similar to the one on the SPB121, which introduced the Alpinist to the Prospex family in 2020.

The other strap is a new twist for the esteemed mountaineering watch. It is a navy blue woven nylon two-piece strap with white stitching and a steel push-button folding clasp.

The brushed dial texture and rose gold-colored elements tilt this particular Alpinist reference toward dress watch territory. But, swap in the nylon strap, and it can handle the great outdoors without issue.

The SPB531 ‘Night Sky’ further cements the Alpinist as one of Seiko’s best all-purpose, daily-wear watches.

Availability and pricing

The Seiko Prospex Alpinist ‘Night Sky’ will be available in September 2025. The only problem for American Seiko fans is that this beautiful watch is exclusive to the European market for £780 (~$1,036).

Getting one secondhand shouldn’t be too much of an issue. It is technically a limited edition, but with a run of 3,000 pieces, it won’t be hard to find.
