Seiko Is Offering Its Dive Watch Fans a Rare Opportunity

To help celebrate the 60th anniversary of the 62MAS, Seiko’s first true dive watch, fans can weigh in on what the next reference will look like.

Seiko does fan service with the best of them. Not only does it maintain an expansive and steadily updated catalog, but it also balances innovative new designs with archival fan favorites better than any other watchmaker.

One thing Seiko hasn’t done, at least not to my knowledge, is ask fans directly what they want to see in a new watch. That is, until now.

From July 1 through the end of the month, Seiko will hold a poll to determine which hue the next 1965 Dive Watch will be.

All four options are colored versions of the limited edition 60th Anniversary Dive Watch that went on sale earlier this year. It introduced the 3D ocean wave textured dial.

Now grouped as the 1965 Diver, this fan-favorite dive watch is still colloquially referred to by its original name, the 62MAS. Introduced in 1965, it was Seiko’s first professional-grade dive watch.

Primary colors

The color schemes were inspired by how sunlight interacts with the ocean at different times of day.

Going in chronological order, “Sunrise Orange” has a yellow-orange dial with a burnt orange bezel and dark gray hands, “Daytime Blue” has a crystal blue dial with a light blue bezel and steel hands, “Late Afternoon Green” has an emerald dial with a dark green bezel and gold hands and “Sunset Red” has a fire-engine red dial and bezel with gold hands.

Judging by initial reactions from social media and the Gear Patrol editors’ room, “Afternoon Green” appears to be the early favorite. Interestingly, Seiko recently released a similar-looking green 1965 Diver as part of its ongoing PADI collaboration, which you can buy now.

The Original Seiko Diver

This rare fan poll is part of a year-long celebration for the 60th anniversary of the 62MAS. Seiko made waterproof watches before 1965, but none had SCUBA diving capabilities.

Seiko revived the 62MAS in 2020 under the Prospex collection of sport and tool watches. Since then, all new reference numbers start with SPB, and over a dozen have been released.

With 300m water resistance and a classic look that rivals the Rolex Submariner and Omega Seamaster, the 62MAS, or 1965 Diver, or SPB— depending whom you ask —has become Seiko’s most admired and desired dive watch.

There are strong arguments for each color. Personally, I would like to see the red or orange win because there hasn’t been a 62MAS or 1965 Diver that looks anything like either.

Regardless of which color wins, it will be highly coveted by Seiko Boys and dive watch fans alike.

Availability and pricing

Seiko’s 1965 Diver poll runs through July 2025, but the release date is still very open-ended. As of now, Seiko will only say that it will come out in 2026.

In the meantime, the white-dialed 60th Anniversary Diver released earlier in the year is a limited edition of 6,000 and is still available for those who can’t wait or prefer the 3D ocean wave dial texture in white.
