Rory McIlroy’s Masters Watch Marks a New High for Omega and a Major Trend

Sunday, April 13th, 2025, finally delivered what many had expected to happen years ago. After years of near misses and baffling Sunday collapses, Rory McIlroy won the 2025 Masters in a nail-biting playoff.

The win immediately qualifies as the most outstanding achievement of his already Hall of Fame-level golf career. It also confirms McIlroy’s place in one of the most exclusive clubs in all of sports.

Rory McIlroy is now one of only six golfers to complete a career Grand Slam, joining all-time greats Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods.

We’re thrilled for the McIlroy clan and love what the victory says about triumphing over mental adversity. But of course, being the product nerds that we are, our attention naturally gravitated towards seeing what watch Rory would wear during the 2025 Green Jacket Ceremony.

We knew it would be an Omega. The question was, which one?

A Peak Ambassador Moment

In 2013, the brand officially signed McIlroy as a brand ambassador away from Audemars Piguet, adding him to a crew of high-profile representatives that already included Michael Phelps, Nicole Kidman, George Clooney, Sergio Garcia and Stacy Lewis at the time.

As such, we’re used to seeing the Irishman sport a variety of unique (and expensive) Omega watches during podium ceremonies that have ranged from everything from a ~$137,000 De Ville Tourbillion to a Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M.

The star has even earned his own Rory McIlroy Special Edition Speedmaster ’57 in yellow gold and collaborated with Omega to develop the Seamaster Aqua Terra Ultra Light.

But we’d argue that the Omega Speedmaster “Silver Snoopy Award” 50th Anniversary Series he wore while accepting his green jacket will be his most influential pick yet.

And though few will care outside of diehard brand fans and Omega staffers, this moment has to feel especially sweet for Omega given that just last year, Masters Tournament winner Scottie Scheffler, wore a notable watch made by its arch-rival – a Rolex Submariner 116110LV, known by its nickname The Hulk among watch circles.

A Relatively Affordable Watch That’s Very On Trend

The so-called Silver Snoopy Award Speedmaster is one of our watch editor Johnny Brayson’s favorite watches, and we’ve covered it at length since it was first launched in 2020.

It’s a gorgeous blue-and-white Speedmaster edition that honors Omega’s 50th anniversary of receiving NASA’s Silver Snoopy Award in 1970.

NASA created the Silver Snoopy Award two years earlier to increase public recognition of key contributors to NASA’s space efforts beyond its super-star Astronauts.

It’s awarded explicitly by NASA’s astronauts to others in the space program for “outstanding performance, contributing to flight safety and mission success.”

NASA states that “fewer than 1 percent of the aerospace program workforce receive it annually,” making it a rare honor.

But the award itself is also extremely cool. It consists of a certificate of appreciation and commendation signed by an astronaut and a sterling silver lapel pin of Snoopy in an astronaut outfit that has previously flown in space.

Today, the award is credited with formalizing the connection between Charles M. Schulz’s beloved Peanuts Pooch and America’s space program. As such, it is also seen as the inspiration behind arguably both of the biggest and quirkiest subgenres in watchmaking, a.k.a. Snoopy watches.

Many already considered the Omega Speedmaster “Silver Snoopy Award” 50th Anniversary Series one of the best Snoopy watches ever, long before McIlroy chose to wear it at the 2025 Masters.

That’s why buying a Silver Snoopy Speedmaster at retail is traditionally extremely difficult despite the fact that the watch technically isn’t a limited release or exceptionally expensive at an MSRP of $10,600.

Now, with its fresh new golf credentials, though, we don’t expect buying one to get any easier. But at least there’s now a Snoopy MoonSwatch too.
