It wasn’t that long ago when Raymond Weil was basically an afterthought in the watch industry, lost in a sea of several similar Swiss brands with uninspiring names, affordable price points, and a comparatively short history.

But that all changed when the brand’s Millesime, which unexpectedly took home the Challenge Prize at the GPHG Awards — essentially the Oscars for watches — in late 2023.

All of a sudden, Raymond Weil was a hot brand getting a lot of attention, and it has fully capitalized on its newfound hype with a run of impressive new releases in the year and change since its award-winning moment. (Just check out the gorgeous Millesime Chronographs that debuted last year.)

Raymond Weil’s latest release continues the brand’s hot streak, as it brings a high-end complication and styling to a surprisingly affordable price segment.

Complete-ly New

Raymond Weil’s latest watch is the Freelancer Complete Calendar, a dressy new entry into the brand’s wide-ranging Freelancer collection. Generally speaking, the Freelancer models possess more of a versatile, everyday look than the retro Millesime, so it’s nice to see RW give some attention to its non-Millesime watches.

The new complete calendar features the day, date, month and moonphase displays on the dial in a very classic layout that’s straight out of Patek Philippe’s playbook. The day and date occupy separate small windows side by side below the brand logo at 12 o’clock, while the date appears in a subdial at 6 o’clock along with the moonphase.

The moonphase display is especially gorgeous at this price point, as it boasts a starry background and a photorealistic rendering of the moon inspired by an actual NASA image.

Both versions are powered by what Raymond Weil is calling the calibre RW3281 automatic movement, which is a Sellita SW300-1 fitted with a calendar module.

The 40mm case features a mix of brushed and polished finishing and curved lugs to help it hug the wrist. 100m of water resistance adds to the versatility of the model, which comes in two distinct styles.

The dressier version has a stainless steel case with rose gold PVD coating and a sunray silver dial with rose gold-plated indices. It’s available exclusively on a brown calfskin leather strap complete with a folding rose gold PVD deployant clasp.

A sportier take on the form comes in plain stainless steel and is mounted on a five-link Jubilee-ish bracelet. It features a deep blue sunray dial and nickel-plated indices for a bit of shine.

The Freelancer Complete Calendar is not available yet on the brand’s U.S. website but should be soon, and both are priced exactly the same at $3,650.

Now, that is pricey for a Raymond Weil. The Complete Calendar is one of the brand’s most expensive models, with only a handful of its chronographs costing more.

However, it is also an exceptional value for a complete calendar with a moonphase — especially one as handsome and versatile as this one.

I gotta say… I really like the new Raymond Weil.
