There’s an unspoken annual tradition in the world of watch media to assign a trend to each year’s new releases. From 2018’s year of the Pepsi GMT to the green-watch takeover of 2021, there’s generally a consensus that forms right after the year’s biggest industry trade show.

However, there was no true consensus at this year’s Watches and Wonders Geneva show. Brands’ releases were kind of all over the map, with some companies playing it safe, some acting as crowd-pleasers and others getting a little weird.

But looking outside of the Watches and Wonders releases, there’s actually a pretty clear trend that’s forming in the world of watches. For brands as diverse as H. Moser & Cie., Tudor and Zodiac, their most hyped watches of 2024 all share one thing in common: They’re all pink.

Moser’s Miami Moment

I recently ventured down to Miami for the 2024 Formula One Miami Grand Prix, where I got the chance to check out the latest release from independent Swiss brand H. Moser & Cie. The brand recently became the watch partner of BWT Alpine F1 Team, and to celebrate, Moser launched a special pink version of the Streamliner Cylindrical Tourbillon Skeleton Alpine Limited Edition that had been released in blue just a couple of weeks earlier. (Alpine’s official team colors are blue and pink.)

I had the opportunity to wear the watch around the Paddock Club for a bit, and even in that one-percenter playground where practically everyone is wearing a radically expensive, rare and incredible watch, the Moser — with its bright pink rubber strap, skeletonized in-house tourbillon movement and pink spinel dial — especially stood out.

While in Miami, I had the chance to ask Alpine driver and Moser partner Pierre Gasly what he thought of the new trend of pink watches. “I find it cool,” Gasly says. “I wasn’t a massive pink enthusiast until last year when my favorite car livery was actually the pink one. There’s just something about it when it’s nicely balanced like it is on the watch; it’s quite a strong color.”

And while Moser’s $98,000 masterpiece may be the most impressive pink watch to debut in 2024, it certainly isn’t the first.

The pink trend began in earnest last year with TAG Heuer. At Watches and Wonders 2023, the brand unveiled the new Carrera Date 36mm three-hander in hot pink, along with the next-level Carrera Plasma Diamant D’Avant Garde featuring a dial made from lab-grown diamonds and with pink diamonds for the crown and logo.

Those releases flew somewhat under the radar — overshadowed by the concurrent release of the Carrera Chronograph “Glassbox” — until Ryan Gosling came along. The actor wore the former frequently while making the rounds during promotion for the smash-hit Barbie movie, and he wore the latter for his viral performance of the film’s song “I’m Just Ken” at the 2024 Oscars.

In February, Grand Seiko celebrated 20 years of its revolutionary Spring Drive movement by releasing a limited-edition pink version of its flagship Snowflake watch. The pink dial represents the morning sun reflecting off of fresh-fallen snow, and in my humble opinion it ranks among the most beautiful dials Grand Seiko has ever created, which is saying something.

Tudor also made headlines with its own pink watch in March of this year — a highly limited variation of its Black Bay Chrono featuring a pale pink dial that aligned with the brand’s new sponsorship of the MLS club Inter Miami CF (Miami sure does love pink). The watch has quickly become a hot commodity among collectors, with actor Mark Wahlberg — one of the foremost celebrity watch geeks — having been already spotted wearing one.

Then there’s Zodiac. The affordable Swiss brand launched a new version of its Super Sea Wolf GMT with a hot pink and white bezel just prior to the start of Watches and Wonders in April, and I wore one to Geneva. The watch, by far, ranks as the most complimented watch I’ve ever worn, showing that there is clearly an appetite and curiosity out there for pink men’s watches.

For its second official watch as the timekeeping partner of the BWT Alpine F1 team, Moser did something wild and colorful. In other words, the watch is completely on brand. It’s a Streamliner powered by a skeletonized cylindrical tourbillon movement featuring a domed dial crafted from transparent pink synthetic spinel and mounted on a hot pink natural rubber strap.

Grand Seiko Pink Snowflake

In honor of Spring Drive’s 20th anniversary, Grand Seiko created this special version of the most iconic Spring Drive-powered watch: the Snowflake. This iteration maintains the original’s dimensions and titanium build, but it swaps out the white textured dial for a pale pink one that emulates the morning sun’s reflection on freshly fallen snow.

A more affordable and simplified take on the classic Carrera, TAG Heuer gets small and colorful with this 36mm, hot pink sports watch that experienced a zeitgeisty moment thanks to Ryan Gosling wearing it to promote the Barbie film. It is most definitely “Kenough.”
