Panerai is synonymous with quality, luxury and excellence, and nothing demonstrates the brand’s core values quite like its most famous and iconic series: the Luminor Collection. This week, Panerai unveiled an updated Luminor collection at Watches and Wonders in Geneva, one focused on preserving the core identity of Panerai’s signature aesthetics, reliability and functionality, while integrating new essential details and technical features.
A Brief History of Luminor

The reimagined Luminor Marina collection represents the evolution of one of Panerai’s most emblematic and enduring timepieces. Its origins trace back to the 1950s, when Panerai developed a new luminescent compound for a collection called Luminor, following its earlier innovation with Radiomir. For decades, Panerai supplied the Italian Navy with precision instruments built to meet the Militare‘s exacting standards.
The standout Luminor features include the crown protective device with lever, lauded today as one of the most emblematic and instantly recognizable elements of the collection. By the 1960s, the safety lock system, sandwich dial and enhanced luminescence set Luminor apart and became synonymous with Panerai.
In the early 90s, Panerai introduced the Luminor series to the civilian public for the first time. Characterized by a distinctive aesthetic, bold size and departure from precious materials, the Luminor disrupted the conventions of watch design and instantly set a new standard for rugged elegance.
Balancing Form and Function

The latest Panerai Luminor Marina timepieces were unveiled at Watches and Wonders 2025, marking the next chapter in the legacy of the Luminor Marina collection. This new series combines refined technical advancements with the bold, iconic design that has defined the collection for years. Offered in both titanium and steel, these timepieces are crafted for the confident individual who seeks a watch that balances striking presence with purposeful functionality.
Whether you’re prioritizing utility, elegance, performance, or shopping with collecting in mind, the new Luminor Marina series has something for every sensibility.
Iconic Movements, Modern Updates
At the heart of the Luminor Marina series is the P.980 calibre, a precision automatic movement with a three-day power reserve. Additionally, the new Luminor Marina series features, for the first time ever, water resistance up to 50 BAR (~500 meters), a debut standard for the collection. The Luminor Marina features a caliber with sleeker proportions, and the case design has been retooled with a 12 percent reduction in thickness, and a 15 percent reduction in weight — adding to the wearability of the design. The new lugs and PAM Click release system on both the strap and buckle make strap swaps easy and tool-free.
For the first time in Panerai’s core collection, the Luminor series utilizes the Super-LumiNova® X2, an innovation that increases brightness and ensures readability even in low-light conditions — an homage to the importance of the brightness and readability for critical military naval missions, which made Panerai so indispensable.
Intriguing updates to Luminor are present in each of the five redefined models, including an updated, simplified dial — which displays only the Maison’s name and ‘Luminor Marina’, with an enlarged beveled date —designed for a bolder and cleaner look. The rhodium small seconds display supports performance by allowing users to verify functionality without effort.
