  • Panerai just overhauled the Luminor Marina collection with a new movement, a smaller and lighter case, a higher depth rating and a new quick-release strap system
  • The line also includes a new braceleted version complete with a micro-adjustment as well as a premium titanium version
  • Pricing and release timing are still TBD

Panerai’s Luminor collection is as iconic as it is unique in the dive watch world.

Several design hallmarks have remained constant, from the civilian version introduced in the early 1990s to recent iterations, including Panerai’s trademark large cushion-shaped case with curved crown protector, sandwich dials, and its namesake bright lume.

Panerai

The new 2025 Luminor Marina collection — distinguished from the base Luminor via a running seconds indicator — is no exception to this trend and, unsurprisingly, looks very similar to previous generations.

But rather than settle for a minor refresh, Panerai introduced a suite of massive improvements under the hood to make the new Luminor Marina even more capable and easier to wear.

It Can Dive Deeper

The 2025 Luminor Marina series features an impressive new depth rating of 50 bar or approximately 500 meters.

The Luminor Marina features an improved depth rating of 50 bar or approximately 500 meters, a first for the Luminor line. This also means the new Marina series is now rated to go deeper than other dive watch icons like the Rolex Submariner and Blancpain Fifty Fathoms.

This improvement alone could have been enough for Panerai to justify a new release.

It Also Shines Brighter

Panerai has also upgraded the lume on the new Luminoar Marina series to Super-LumiNova X2, which offers a 10% increase in luminosity over Super-LumiNova X1 after 180 minutes in the dark.

Expanding on its namesake, the new Luminor Marina series is also now the first in Panerai’s core collection to feature Super-LumiNova X2.

Paneristis may remember that this new-grade lume was first introduced on the Submersible GMT Luna Rossa Titanio (PAM01507) and the insane Submersible Elux LAB-ID (PAM01800), which we ranked as the second most important product of 2024.

It’s supposed to offer a 10% increase in luminosity over Super-LumiNova X1 after 180 minutes in the dark.

The Movement Is New

The watch’s new Cal. P.980 automatic movement offers a hacking seconds function, which halts the seconds hand when the crown is pulled out, to allow wearers to set the time more precisely.

The Luminor Marina’s new Cal. P.980 automatic movement, equipped with a 3-day power reserve, provides the kind of accuracy improvements and finishing — visible via an open sapphire caseback — that are often table stakes with a movement update.

However, the new movement also includes a hacking seconds function, which halts the seconds hand when the crown is pulled out, to allow wearers to set the time more precisely.

It’s Thinner and Lighter

Thanks to the new thin movement, Panerai reduced the thickness of the 2025 Luminor Marina series by 12 percent. The new series also weighs 15 percent less.

The new movement is also thinner, which allowed Panerai to reduce the new Luminor Marina’s case thickness by 12 percent and its weight by 15 percent.

This should be welcome news for anyone who likes the Luminor line’s iconic looks and diving tool watch heritage but not its traditionally chunkier fit.

A premium version in the new Luminor Marina series — a.k.a. the Luminor Marina Titanio — is obviously even lighter thanks to a case made from Grade 5 titanium in place of stainless steel.

That said, the Luminor Marina still boasts a 44mm diameter, meaning it still placks plenty of that Panerai wrist presence.

Plus a New Strap Change System and Bracelet

Swapping out straps or the bracelet on the new Panerai Marina series is easily done via Panerai’s PAM Click release system. The new bracelet is also the first to feature a micro-adjustment option that Panerai calls “Quick Length Adjustment,” which allows the bracelet to stretch up to 2mm on each side.
Panerai

This improvement may divide fans. The new Luminor Marina series adopts the PAM Click release system used on other select Panerai lines, including the Luminor Due.

To Panerai’s credit, the system offers a dead simple, tool-free way to change straps. But it also requires buying custom straps from Panerai.

Buyers interested in using a traditional strap still can, but they’ll have to just be comfortable loosening and tightening the strap tube screws via a small screwdriver.

One of the new models in the new Luminor Marina series, the PAM03323, also gains a new V-shape, tapering metal bracelet design similar to the six variants launched last year.

But this is the first version of the bracelet to also feature a micro-adjustment option that Panerai calls “Quick Length Adjustment,” which allows the bracelet to stretch up to 2mm on each side.

The bracelet can also be easily swapped via the same quick-release system.
