I can be a little hardheaded when it comes to my opinions on watches, and while some of my stances may be controversial within the larger enthusiast community (Hublot makes cool watches, I don’t care what you say), some of my takes are pretty mainstream.

One of my more agreeable opinions is that every chronograph should be available in a panda variant. Not only are panda dials a classic design choice for a chronograph, but the contrast they provide makes them both more attractive and more practical, thanks to their enhanced legibility.

I’m happy to report that another great chronograph is now available in panda form with Oris’s launch today of the Divers Sixty-Five Chronograph Ocean Green.

A panda dial on a vintage-inspired chronograph is like catnip to me.
Oris

Rather than a traditional black and white panda layout, Oris has given us a silvery sunburst dial paired with mossy-green subdials and a matching dive-time bezel. Oris calls the shade “Ocean Green,” and although I suppose it’s a fairly modern color for a watch, I still find it a natural fit for the Divers Sixty-Five Chrono’s retro sensibilities.

Outside of the new colors and panda layout, this is the exact same Divers Sixty-Five Chronograph that Oris currently offers with an all-black dial. That means you’re still getting a 40mm case in stainless steel with 100m of water resistance, a domed sapphire crystal that mimics old-school acrylic and a unidirectional dive-time bezel with an aluminum insert.

Your bracelet and strap options also remain unchanged. There is the matching stainless steel three-link bracelet complete with faux rivets (another hot take: I like ’em), or a black leather strap with white contrast stitching. Although the leather strap looks fine, I think a black Tropic rubber strap would be preferable here.

Finally, sitting behind the closed caseback is the same red-rotored movement as before, Oris’s Cal. 771 automatic chronograph, which is based on the extremely popular Swiss-made Sellita SW500-1, which itself is a derivative of the iconic ETA/Valjoux 7750.

Pricing and Availability

As a sucker for panda dials, I’m a big fan of this move from Oris. The Divers Sixty-Five Chronograph in black is a nice-looking watch, don’t get me wrong, but this new Ocean Green version allows the design’s vintage vibes to really sing.

The watch is available now from Oris for the exact same price as its monochrome sibling. On a bracelet, the chronograph retails for $4,700, while on the leather strap, it will set you back $4,500.
