  • IWC expands upon the Gerald Genta-designed Ingenieur with a 35mm version, available in stainless steel and 18-carat 5N gold
  • The Ingenieur Automatic 35 features the 47110 calibre, found in the Ingenieur Automatic 3521 produced from 1993 to 2001
  • The brand has also expanded the line in other ways, including a ceramic version, an F1 movie tie-in watch, and a perpetual calendar

Gerald Genta was not responsible for the first Ingenieur, which originally debuted in the 1950s as an antimagnetic watch for scientists.

However, the designer’s ’70s-era makeover means the brand’s luxury sports watch will forever be compared to the Royal Oak and Nautilus that also bear his signature. (Of course, an integrated bracelet and porthole-style case also help.)

Watches and Wonders Geneva: The watch world’s biggest release party may be over but the year in horology has just begun. Catch up on all the key novelties from Rolex, Panerai, Patek Philippe and more.

Today, Genta’s take on the watch lives on in the form of the Ingenieur Automatic 40 — released in 2023 — and now the newer, slimmed-down Ingenieur Automatic 35, making its debut at Watches and Wonders Geneva this year.

As the name suggests, the Ingenieur Automatic 35 has a case that measures just 35mm. But the thickness also slims down to 9.44mm (compared to 10.7mm on the Ingenieur Automatic 40).

That’s thanks to the same 47110 calibre found in the 34mm Ingenieur Automatic 3521, produced from 1993 to 2001, and here on full display by way of an exhibition caseback (absent on the original 40mm variants).

While 35mm is indeed a small watch by today’s standards, the Ingenieur Automatic 35 remains faithful to the history of the watch, which has seen references that measure between 35mm and 37mm throughout the years.

In any case, it joins the Ingenieur family as an inclusive and ergonomic option, made all the more enticing by three variants: two in steel with a black or silver dial, and one in 18-carat 5N gold with a matching dial. The two steel models mark a new entry point for the Ingenieur line at just $9,950, while the rose gold sits near the top at $37,500.

In addition to the new smaller case size, the Ingenieur line has expanded in other ways with new colors, materials and complications, offering up something for everyone.

The 40mm version now comes in the same 5N gold material as the 35mm version, but with a black dial, and priced at $46,600. There’s also a new 40mm steel version featuring a green dial with gold accents; a tribute to the modified vintage Ingenieur worn by Brad Pitt in the upcoming F1 film. Limited to 1,000 pieces, it goes for $12,900.

Perhaps most hyped is the new 42mm Ingenieur in full black ceramic, which made headlines prior to its debut as a result of Ed Sheeran very publicly flaunting it in multiple high-profile locales in the week leading up to Watches and Wonders. It’s priced at $19,500.

Finally, there’s the new Ingenieur Perpetual Calendar in a 41mm steel case. Featuring a blue dial and IWC’s usual perfectly balanced perpetual calendar layout, the watch sits as the grail at the top of the Ingenieur line while simultaneously slotting in as an absolute bargain compared to other Genta-designed perpetual calendars, with an SRP of just $36,900.

With these new additions, the Ingenieur is now a fully fleshed-out product line, and it’s far better suited to go toe-to-toe against its integrated luxury sports watch rivals.
