Huckberry has cooked up another watch collaboration, and this time it’s an update of a criminally underrated field watch from an unexpected brand.

Citizen is far from the first name that comes to mind when you think of field watches, but the Promaster Tough checks every box and then some.

I field-tested the original Promaster Tough when it was introduced in 2023 and got my hands on Huckberry’s version right before it dropped. Huckberry applied a light touch to this collaboration, demonstrating that its design team knows better than to mess with a good thing.

Everything I liked about the original is still in place, and Huckberry’s minimal update slightly improves the visibility of an already highly legible dial.

The Promaster Tough has large lume-coated hour markers, wide hands filled with segmented lume and a date window at three o’clock. However, its true strength can only be appreciated on the wrist.

This sleek field watch uses Citizen’s proprietary Super Titanium, which is featherweight even by titanium watch standards. Comprising the case and bracelet, it makes this watch feel as light and soft as plastic on the wrist.

Taking the field

I appreciate a collaboration emphasizing both parties’ strengths without overbranding the product. Huckberry found a watch that its design team loved and gave it a touch of vintage military vibes.

In a press release, Huckberry’s design team cited several previous Citizen titanium watch collaborations as inspiration for this model, including a Yellowstone National Park Edition and several references produced for the British Royal Marines.

The only branding Huckberry applied to the watch is hidden away on the case back, where an etching of the retailer’s tree logo is positioned.

(Speaking of the case back, it is worth noting that Citizen Eco-Drive watches must be sent back to the brand to be serviced, which is indicated there.)

Huckberry only made two adjustments to the original Promaster Tough, and both are on the dial. The dial color is an olive drab, which is new to the collection but retains the shimmering grainy texture of previous references.

The other update is that the painted numeral, baton and triangle hour markers are now outlined. I have to say that, even though it is a minor difference, I like the outlined look more than the original solid markers because it adds a layer of texture to the dial.

Huckberry has a thing for titanium watches, having previously worked with Timex and Zodiac in the alloy. So it was only a matter of time before a collaboration with Citizen happened.

Citizen created the first titanium watch in 1970, and the Japanese watchmaker has dominated the field ever since. Super Titanium is the lightest and most durable version of the alloy I’ve tested in watches, and it’s not even close.

The whole package

One of the most remarkable aspects of Huckberry’s Promaster Tough has nothing to do with the watch itself.

The watch comes in the same decorative hard case as the original Citizen version, which is fully functional for transporting the watch or other small items. But, inside the hard case is a watch roll in the same olive drab color as the dial.

Although the material is not listed anywhere, I’m pretty sure it’s some sort of synthetic that resembles leather on the outside and suede on the inside. It is one of the best bonus items I’ve ever seen accompanying a watch under $1,000.

As if this bonus gift weren’t enough, Huckberry is also selling its take on the Promaster Tough for $50 less than Citizen’s MSRP. That’s icing on the cake for what is already one of the best affordable field watches.

Final thoughts

After testing out the Citizen Promaster Tough for a second time, I’m sold on the merits of this field watch, with Huckberry’s adjustments to the color and hour markers making a noticeable positive difference.

From a technical perspective, the case and bracelet alone are a steal at $525. Citizen’s light-powered Eco-Drive is effectively a mid-tier quartz movement, but it makes sense on a field watch and keeps the price down.

If you’re in the market for an affordable field watch that can be worn daily, this is about as good a bargain as you can get.
