Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar debuted in theaters ten years ago. (Oh God, has it really been that long?) The film was a thrilling outer space adventure with some big special effects and some bigger philosophical questions about space and time, and right smack dab in the middle of it all was a Hamilton watch.

Hamilton’s connections to Hollywood are well known by now, as the brand’s watches have appeared in countless films. But the watch from Interstellar is perhaps the best-known (and best-loved) of them all.

A Hollywood Legend

Hamilton made a special field watch strictly as a prop for the film, worn by Jessica Chastain’s character “Murph” Cooper. Not only did the watch play a key role in the movie, but it also happened to be one of the best-looking watches the American-turned-Swiss brand had ever made.

Fans noticed. After years of enthusiasts petitioning the brand, Hamilton launched a screen-accurate consumer version of the watch in 2019. But watch enthusiasts are a fickle bunch, and they still weren’t satisfied.

Many felt the Khaki Field Murph, while screen accurate, was too big at 42mm. So Hamilton once again listened to its fans and released a smaller version of the Murph in 38mm in 2022.

That watch became a massive hit (even possible future VP Tim Walz is a fan), but as it turns out, Hamilton had even more surprises in store for the Murph, as the brand has now released two more versions of the watch.

More Murphs!

The two new Murph references are both in the more popular 38mm size, which I would argue is now the de facto size of the Murph.

First up is a new dial color. Now, in addition to the original black version, the Murph is available in white. White watches are currently having a bit of a moment on the back of the Omega Speedmaster white dial release earlier this year, and I think the new white Murph will also prove quite popular.

Having handled the watch myself, I was stunned at the level of depth on the dial. The dial’s finish isn’t flat like on the black version. Instead, it has a grainy texture that really pops in direct light and makes the domed lume Arabic indices look even more three-dimensional. It’s one of the most interesting and intricate dials I’ve ever seen on a field watch.

The other new reference is the same 38mm black-dial Murph as before, except now you can get it on a stainless steel bracelet. Although I haven’t seen the bracelet in person yet, it looks quite nice. It features three rows of brushed, rounded links with lines of polish along the outer edges of the center link and it somewhat resembles the classic Speedmaster Moonwatch bracelet.

The bracelet is equipped with quick-release spring bars and a very heavy-duty folding clasp, which does not feature a tool-free micro-adjust system.

White Bracelet When?

I loved nearly everything about the white Murph. The dial is stunning, the size is perfect, and the case finishing is as impressive as always. There’s a reason why the 38mm Murph is so popular, and the white dial will certainly appeal to those who love the Murph but want something with a bit more visual interest.

The only thing I don’t love about the white Murph is the included calf leather strap. It’s very, very stiff, and while I’m sure it would loosen over time (I had the watch for just two days), the cheap-looking, shiny, embossed crocodile exterior would remain.

What I’m wondering is why Hamilton doesn’t offer the new bracelet option on the white-dial version of the watch. The white watch has the exact same case as the black version, but at least at launch, you can only get the bracelet paired with the black dial — the white dial’s only strap option is the faux-croc leather.

Hopefully Hamilton makes the bracelet available on the white dial soon, but even if they don’t, the white Murph is still worth buying. You can always just pick up a new strap, and with the Murph coming in well below $1,000, you should have plenty left in the watch budget to do so.
