Hamilton has held the title of the king of field watches for the past century by maintaining the look and performance it established during World War I.

Under the Swatch Group umbrella since 1974, the brand has kept the iconic Khaki Field Watch collection competitive with technical updates. However, the appearance has respectfully stuck to a well-established design language.

Straying from that well-loved and time-tested design language is risky, but Hamilton has pulled it off masterfully with a new special edition dial. The texture is an icy blue and white, meant to emulate the surface of Alpine glaciers.

Because the dial texture is so extraordinary for the Khaki Field collection, Hamilton’s design team was wise enough to keep every other visual element in line with existing models.

This 38mm Khaki Field Mechanical has a bead-blasted stainless steel case with a signed crown. The dial markings and hands match the current format used throughout the Mechanical line.

It comes with a pair of nylon NATO straps. One is solid blue and matches the strap paired with the standard blue dial Khaki Field Mechanical, and the other is blue with a white stripe.

I’m so icy

Even casual fans of the brand know that Hamilton was originally an American company, founded in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in 1892. However, it likely only exists today because it has been part of the Swatch Group since the 1970s.

The Swiss watchmaking mega-conglomerate has been an excellent steward of the historically significant brand, keeping it financially attainable without sacrificing its reputation for reliability.

Hamilton proudly displays its American roots, but it is arguably more of a Swiss company today, since that is where everything is made. The Khaki Field Mechanical Zermatt Exclusive blends those transatlantic cultures.

The case shape and dial layout date back to Hamilton’s days in Lancaster, but the dial is an ode to the iconic field watch’s new home in the Swiss Alps.

When in Zermatt

Located near the base of the famous Matterhorn, Zermatt is an idyllic Swiss village known for skiing, mountaineering and sightseeing. Surrounded by natural beauty, it is also a destination for shopping and dining.

Hamilton partnered with Air Zermatt, a helicopter tourism company, 10 years ago for a boutique store where you can book sightseeing flights or trips to the Matterhorn and buy watches.

Alongside adventure travel, natural beauty and destination dining, Hamilton has added one more reason to visit Zermatt. This gorgeous new Khaki Field Mechanical, with its unique dial and custom-engraved case back, can only be purchased in person at the Zermatt boutique.

If you don’t factor in the cost of getting to the store, this special edition Khaki Field Mechanical sells for the same characteristically affordable price as its standard issue brethren.

It is fair to say that this is the ultimate souvenir for Hamilton fans visiting Switzerland.

Availability and pricing

The Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical Zermatt Exclusive is available now at the Hamilton x Air Zermatt Boutique for CHF 595, which currently exchanges for $750.

Can’t make it there? This watch will likely soon pop up on the secondary market for less than a vacation to the notoriously neutral (and expensive) country would cost.
