There is no more iconic field watch in existence than the Hamilton Khaki Field.

With a design that evolved from the Hamilton trench watches worn by U.S. soldiers in WWI, this definitive field watch has over a century of history behind it.

In other words, if you’re going to mess with its design, you’d better know what you’re doing. Luckily, Japanese fashion brand Engineered Garments absolutely knows what it’s doing in the realm of style and design, and the brand’s collaborative new take on Hamilton’s legendary field watch looks like a minimalist masterpiece.

The Minimalist Khaki Field

For the Hamilton x Engineered Garments Khaki Field Titanium Automatic, the two brands opted to scale down the design of the watch, in terms of both its style and size.

Style-wise, this meant eliminating the trademark inner 24-hour scale from the dial, leaving only Arabic hour markers and the outer minute track. The dial is a striking black sunburst, with a subtle concentric ring pattern on the minute track. The hands are also black and are filled with white lume, with all printing, including the lumed indices, in bright white to give the watch a monochrome look.

Minimalist and monochrome, this might be the best-looking take on the Hamilton Khaki Field ever.

The watch is one of the few titanium Khaki Field models to come on a full titanium bracelet, which adds to the minimalist tool-watch look, and it’s the only one Khaki Field Titanium reference to come in a 36mm case size.

That’s right; this limited-edition model has shrunken considerably from its usual 42mm size, a decision made by Engineered Garments’ founder, Daiki Suzuki, to heighten the watch’s versatility and make it more accessible to a wider variety of wrists. It also gives the watch a bit more of a vintage vibe, despite the modern use of titanium and overall contemporary design.

Inside the watch is the same movement as the rest of Hamilton’s Khaki Field Automatic line: the H-10 calibre, Hamilton’s version of ETA’s Powermatic 80 movement, which boasts an impressive 80 hours of power reserve and an anti-magnetic Nivachron hairspring.

But instead of being fully visible behind a sapphire display back, in this case, it’s only half exposed to accommodate an engraved caseback acknowledging the collab.

Pricing and Availability

I think this new collab gives the Murph a run for its money for the title of “Best-Looking Hamilton Khaki Field Variation.” Its clean, minimalist look and smaller size are both stylish and timeless, while its use of titanium is simultaneously premium and comfortable.

I think this watch will be an excellent option for anyone looking for a great all-rounder tool watch (it’s packing 100m of water resistance, FYI), especially for those who are in the market for an affordable alternative to the Rolex Explorer, as the watch’s monochrome looks, clean design and 36mm case size all echo The Crown’s most basic tool watch.

The catch is that only 1,999 examples of the watch will be made — a nod to the year Engineered Garments was founded. They’ll go on sale globally on October 24 for $1,145, keeping in line with Hamilton’s reputation as one of the best bargains in Swiss watchmaking.
