German watchmaker Glashütte Original has one of the most varied catalogs in the luxury watch game.

Want a killer dive watch? Get a SeaQ. In the mood for something haute and avant-garde? Try the Pano collection. Coveting retro vibes? Check out the Original Sixties and Original Seventies.

Finally, if you want a classy dress watch, the brand offers its Senator collection of very traditional-looking dress pieces. There are myriad options within the collection, but my favorite has to be the Senator Excellence Panorama Date Moon Phase, as it combines its two titular complications in a uniquely symmetrical layout. (I like complicated dress watches, okay?)

Today, GO has launched two new references of the Senator Excellence Panorama Date Moon Phase, each with a stunning dial treatment that puts them among the classiest dress watches I’ve ever seen.

Frosted Tips Dials

The new dial colors are “Frosted Silver” and “Frosted Copper.” Both feature hand-applied Roman numeral indices made of gold with blue coating, heat-blued hands, and the titular complications at 10:30 and 4:30, which are driven by the in-house Calibre 36-24 automatic movement.

The “frosted” in the watches’ names comes from the unique treatment applied to the dial. Galvanic coloring is combined with a grained texture and matte finish, giving the watch face a frosted look.

According to the brand, the frosted silver and copper dials take their inspiration from the “rich mineral deposits of the Ore Mountains” near Glashütte and the area’s history of mining. That’s all well and good, but the most important thing is it looks fantastic in both colorways.

Overall, the watches are meant to evoke various past designs from Glashütte Original, which is celebrating its 180th anniversary this year. Well, sort of. The brand in its current form didn’t exist until 1990. It previously had existed since the 1950s as a state-run conglomerate of Glashütte-based watchmakers, including A. Lange & Söhne, which today is a separate brand.

So why is the brand celebrating its 180th birthday? Well, that’s when watchmaking began in the German town of Glashütte, which technically is when the Glashütte Original story began. Watch brands often play it a little fast and loose with their origins given how old many of them are, so I’ll give GO a pass here if their celebration continues to churn out pieces like this.

Pricing and Availability

Both frosted versions of the Senator Excellence Panorama Date Moon Phase feature 40mm stainless steel cases with sapphire display backs and the option of an alligator leather strap or stainless steel bracelet. Both also offer the security of 50m of water resistance and impressive shock-resistance, making them a surprisingly strong option for everyday wear.

The watches start at $11,500 on the strap (it’s an extra $400 if you want to upgrade from a pin buckle to a deployant) and top out at $12,900 on the bracelet.
