Bid Now on These Cinematic Vintage Rolex Watches

There’s buzz in the air around a Phillip’s auction next month featuring some high-profile lots like Steve McQueen’s Monaco, one of Paul Newman’s Daytonas and Sylvester Stallone’s first Panerai watch, among others. All this makes an auction from Bob’s Watches focusing on timepieces with Hollywood connections feel well-timed. They represent some of the most famous and often rare references, in each case the same as those worn by iconic actors (spoiler: there’s a lot for James Bond fans here).

Rolex Submariner Ref. 5512

There are a number of watches associated with actor, race car driver and “king of cool” Steve McQueen. This Rolex Submariner reference 5512 was introduced in 1959 and is the same as that which the actor chose to wear in his personal life, rather than on screen.

Rolex Daytona Ref. 6239

Perhaps the most famous vintage watch of all time is the Rolex Daytona “Paul Newman.” While the actor most famously wore a reference 6239 with a “panda dial” (white with black subdials), this version has a “reverse panda” motif, but is still very much considered a Paul Newman dial.

Rolex GMT Master Ref. 6542

The Rolex reference 6542 was the first GMT Master ever produced, and that alone makes it a pretty cool and notable watch to collect. It’s not only a rare reference but further has a James Bond connection: Though not worn by the spy himself it did appear on the wrist of the actor Honor Blackman in her role as Pussy Galore in the film Goldfinger.

The watch that the late Sean Connery wore in the 1962 film Dr. No is unforgettable — a reference 6538 Rolex Submariner on a famously ill-fitting strap. (He went on to wear the same one in subsequent films as well.) This 6538 has that cinematic connection as well as just the type of patina collectors love, and a faded “ghost” bezel.

Omega Seamaster 300 “Spectre” Limited Edition

Though Omega has been the official watch of the James Bond franchise since 1995, the 2015 movie Spectre saw the first reference produced especially for one of the films. The same model Daniel Craig wore in the 007 role, only 7,007 examples of the Omega Seamaster 300 “Spectre” Limited Edition were produced — and this one offers a fun way to get in on the bidding for those not ready to start in the five-figure range.
