Paul Newman’s Rolex ref. 6239 may have made the “panda” dial world-famous, but who’s to say that everyone’s favorite bamboo-eating bear has a monopoly on black-and-white color combos?

In collaboration with the Charles Darwin Foundation, Casio just dropped a new high-contrast variant of the popular GA-2100 Series G-Shock — a.k.a. the CasiOak, due to its aesthetic similarities to the legendary Audemars Piguet Royal Oak.

Taking after the Galápagos penguin, which mostly inhabit Fernandina and Isabela Islands, the watch boasts a black case and dial, accented with a white band, cream indices and silver hand inlays.

An understated collaboration

Though Casio doesn’t include the word “penguin” in the official name of the watch, GAB2100CD1A7, there’s no mistaking the source of inspiration here.

A tiny penguin figure functions as the hand on the function sundial, while another can be found stamped on the strap. The best part is that neither are visible at arm’s length.

Following that thread of subtlety, brash crossbranding is notably absent here. The Darwin Foundation logo is tucked away, etched into the case back, while a tonal map of the Galapagos archipelago adds some subtle texture to the dial.

Pricing and availability

The Casio G-Shock GAB2100CD1A7 isn’t the only new colorway to join the CasiOak family as part of the brand’s collaboration the the Charles Darwin Foundation. A black-and-red version, which takes after the Galápagos marine iguana, also enters the fold. Both retail for $170.

It is worth noting that proceeds do not financially support the Darwin Foundation or Galapagos Island conservation in any way. According to Casio, the mashup is simply meant to “raise awareness of the critical need for environmental protection.”
