Released in 2024, the GD-010 and GA-010 brought a bevy of classic G-Shock qualities to the masses. Large displays, 10-year batteries and carbon fiber-reinforced housing, all for $99 and $120, respectively.

Now, the introduction of Cordura Re/cor straps bring a touch of military-grade toughness to two of the brand’s best affordable beaters, with an eye toward sustainability.

Call in the reinforcements

Cordura was originally developed by DuPont in the first half of the 20th century, and it didn’t take long for the US military to use the highly durable fabric to reinforce vehicle tires and tank treads.

Today, it’s found its way into civilian backpacks, military apparel and, in this case, watch straps. However, the type fabric used in the colorful G-Shock GD-010CE-5 and GA-010CE-2A isn’t your typical Cordura of yesteryear.

Cordura Re/cor, introduced several years ago in Mystery Ranch’s District series of backpacks, is made with recycled post-consumer polyester waste to lessen manufacturers’ dependence on virgin materials.

G-Shock here goes one further by using natural dyes derived from echinacea flowers and red turnips, which combine with bio-based resins for some of the most sustainably minded watches in G-Shock’s entire lineup.

That said, one of the most environmentally conscious decisions one can make as a consumer is to turn their back on one-and-done products — namely by buying goods that go the distance.

It’s a good thing then that even the battery on the GD-010CE-5 and GA-010CE-2A models can last a decade, with the carbon fiber-reinforced housing and Cordura Re/cor straps designed to survive much — much — longer.

G-Shock GD-010CE-5

A spin on G-Shock’s GD010, released in 2024, the GD010CE-5 adds a Cordura Re/cor strap to the no-nonsense watch where durability and legibility are paramount. It’s joined by GA-010CE-2A for collectors who want an analog-digital display. Both watches utilize natural dyes and bio-based resin in the spirit of sustainability.
