Resin has a relatively low environmental impact compared to other watch band materials that are either mined from the ground or harvested from animals, but it still creates waste.

But Casio found something cool to do with the scraps left over from the production of various watch components: build another watch!

In celebration of Earth Day 2025, which takes place on April 22, Casio has released the G-Shock G5600BG-5, a 5600 series with an outer case and strap built from a resin composite containing discarded scraps from the factory floor.

In keeping with the environmental theme, Casio chose green and white resin trimmings, ground them into a powder and kneaded that into a beige base to create an earthy marbled texture.

It provides a visual and spiritual connection to G-Shock’s role as one of the most adored watches among outdoor enthusiasts.

Reduce, reuse…

As one of the largest producers of resin watches, Casio presumably creates a lot of resin refuse. It would be impossible to put it all back into the supply chain, but reducing any amount destined for a landfill is a good start.

Notably, the recycled resin used for the G5600BG-5 is not 100 percent derived from scraps. The process requires some new material to create a stable compound suitable for the durability expected of G-Shock watches.

No information is available on the exact chemical breakdown of the recycled resin, but some of the reclaimed material is visible within the watch. All of the green within the marbled texture comes from production scraps.

G-Shock has produced plenty of marbled textured resin watches before, but the G5600BG-5 offers the benefit of feeling good about your watch’s slightly mitigated environmental impact.

A 5600, of course

No other watch in the G-Shock pantheon would have been a better fit for this design than the 5600. It is, by far, the brand’s most popular line and one of the most used watches for outdoor adventure and casual athletics.

Adding to the watch’s earth-friendly nature, the G5600BG-5 is equipped with Casio’s G5600 solar-powered quartz movement, which charges the battery with any light source.

Along with G-Shock’s legendary shock resistance, this 5600 has a countdown timer, a stopwatch, a calendar, five time zones and a back-lit screen. All that tech is protected by a 200m water resistance rating.

Already a favorite watch series among the environmentally conscious, this recycled resin 5600 takes the edge as the best G-Shock.

Hopefully, Casio will develop the production tech further and scale it up to keep more scraps in the supply chain and make a wider range of colors and models.

Availability and pricing

The Casio G-Shock G5600BG-5 with recycled resin is available now from Casio for $150. It is not a limited edition and joins the 5600 regular production line.
