Casio’s G-Shock sub-brand is no stranger to reviving iconic watch designs. However, its latest release takes things to another level entirely.

Dubbed the DW-5000R-1A, this is a faithful recreation of the brand’s very first release, the DW-5000 from 1983, complete with period-correct components.

A timely recreation

While there have been other G-Shock’s that harken back to the DW-5000, this one is much more exacting. Not only does it have the same iconic digital face, stainless steel case (with a mirror-polished back) and resin band, but even the smallest details — including the position of the dimples — are spot-on recreations of the original.

It also boasts the same array of features we’ve come to expect from a G-Shock watch. These include a Super Illuminator LED backlight, stopwatch and alarm functionality, a full-auto calendar and 200M of water resistance.

Reimagining a classic

While most of the original design remains intact, there are some timely updates to be found on the DW-5000R-1A. For instance, the case size has been modernized up to 42.3mm from the original 41.6mm.

Furthermore, while the bezel and band are still made from resin, that resin is now a bio-based material to help reduce its environmental impact.

This timekeeping legend wears well on casual occasions, but it’s also so iconic that it wouldn’t be out of place in an office or somewhere more formal.

Available soon

While the brand has announced that this upcoming recreation is currently being manufactured at Casio’s Yamagata facility — the “mother factory” of G-Shock — there’s no word yet on when, specifically, it will drop or how much it will cost. G-Central, a fan-run blog, suggests the DW-5000R-1A will cost 33,000 Japanese yen (about $217).

Casio’s site listing does imply it will release sometime in December. A release this significant is sure to sell out quickly, so keep your eyes and ears open for more information about pricing and availability.
