Watch enthusiasts and astronauts go together like peanut butter and jelly. That’s probably because, unlike most of the specialized equipment used by our intrepid outer space explorers, astronauts’ wristwatches are readily available to civilians.

The watch most associated with astronauts, of course, is the Omega Speedmaster. It was the first watch worn to the moon during the Apollo 11 mission, and the first watch qualified by NASA for manned space missions.

But one thing you may not know about the Speedy and other watches worn by mid-century astronauts is that these watches were often mounted on a third-party bracelet.

As of today, you can get that same astronaut-approved watch bracelet for your Apple Watch.

It’s Komfit-able

The bracelet in question is the Forstner Komfit, a thin mesh bracelet made of stainless steel with a unique sliding clasp that allows the wearer to easily get a perfectly custom fit.

Even before the Speedmaster became NASA’s official astronaut watch in 1965, the organization’s astronauts had already been wearing Komfit bracelets on their own personal watches, most frequently the Speedmaster and Bulova Accutron Astronaut. This was likely due to the bracelet’s comfort, versatility and toolless adjustability.

There are plenty of photos in the NASA Archive of astronauts wearing their Komfit bracelets back at headquarters in casual dress, and even over the sleeves of their spacesuits during the Mercury program. Komfit bracelets are known to have flown on several missions during the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs.

The “First Omega in Space” was mounted on a Komfit bracelet during its legendary 1962 adventure, and in 1972, a Komfit bracelet — at the time known as a “JB Champion” following Jacoby-Bender’s purchase of Forstner in 1963 — was even worn on the moon during the Apollo 17 mission.

Mid-Century Meets 21st Century

Forstner still makes the Komfit bracelet today in various sizes to be used with standard watches like the Speedy, and now the brand has expanded the line by making it available in the specialized sizes required for the Apple Watch, which doesn’t use traditional lugs like an ordinary watch.

For the smartwatch, Forstner is offering the classic Komfit “JB” bracelet, as well as a wider version, in two sizes: one to fit the 38 or 40mm Apple Watch, and the other for the 42mm version. All variants are available in regular and extra-long lengths.

In addition, the brand is also offering two of its other bracelets for the Apple Watch. One is the Bonklip-style Klip, a ladder-like military watch bracelet with a design that dates to the 1940s. It uses a similar sliding clasp to the Komfit to enable a custom fit.

The other available Apple Watch bracelet is the “Thin as a Dime” bracelet, another military style that originated in the 1930s as what was likely Forstner’s first attempt at making a bracelet with a sliding and locking clasp. It’s available in both brushed or polished versions.

All sizes and variants of the Forstner Komfit and “Thin As a Dime” bracelets for Apple Watch are priced the same at $132 each, while the Forstner Klip is $129. All are available now on the brand’s website.
