An Iconic Dive Watch Achieves Its Perfect Form with a Sleeker Build

The most Doxa-looking Doxa I’ve ever seen is an ode to the writer who helped build its reputation as a retro adventure watch.

Though less known than James Bond’s Omega Seamaster or Indiana Jones’s Alden Boots, the reputation of Doxa dive watches was helped along by the fictional adventurer Dirk Pitt.

Through 27 novels and the 2005 film Sahara, where Pitt was portrayed by Matthew McConaughey, a Doxa SUB 300T Professional has been strapped to his wrist.

Pitt is the creation of writer and marine preservation activist Clive Cussler, arguably Doxa’s biggest fan and advocate, rivaled only by legendary explorer Jacques Cousteau and maybe Analog Shift founder James Lamdin.

In celebration of what would have been Cussler’s 94th birthday, Doxa honors the author and kindred spirit with his third signature watch.

Where the previous two examples were a bit over-the-top, featuring faux aging and gaudy dials, the SUB 750T Clive Cussler might be the new definitive reference for the iconic dive watch brand.

Doxa’s signature traffic cone orange dial is decorated with the National Underwater and Marine Agency seal, a non-profit founded by Cussler to preserve historic shipwrecks and marine environments.

The compass rose insignia that decorated the dial on the two previous Cussler watches has been moved to the caseback as an etching, a much more tasteful placement.

The retro aquatic adventure watch

Cussler’s writing helped build Doxa’s reputation as the ultimate retro aquatic adventure watch. This new signature model outperforms even the legendary SUB 300T worn by Pitt.

As the name suggests, it has an impressive 750m water resistance, which is deeper than any human has ever dived, but it speaks to the overall durability of the case.

The same elliptical case found on the SUB 300T, among other notable Doxa references, is used here, but it has been enlarged to withstand over double the atmospheric pressure.

Doxa’s distinctive hand set is employed to maximize legibility, with a skinny hour hand, a large minute hand and a block seconds hand. On the date wheel, displayed in a window at three o’clock, the 7, 15 and 31 are orange in recognition of Cussler’s birthday.

The dial is framed by a dual-track rotating bezel, which is formatted to calculate no-decompression dive times and equipped with a saw blade grip for easy adjustment while wearing dive gloves.

A slimmer build

Along with the retro NUMA seal placed at 7:30, which makes this DOXA feel more authentic than a standard reference, the SUB 750T Clive Cussler boasts a sneaky but impactful update.

Doxa

The 44mm case is only 12mm thick, nearly 2mm thinner than the original SUB 750T introduced in 2005. It lightens the impact that the broad dive watch has on the wrist and creates a sleeker silhouette.

It was nice for Doxa to acknowledge Cussler’s impact on the brand and kindred love for the sea with the two previous references, released in 2023 and 2024. However, this third signature model is the one Cussler, who passed away in 2020, would probably choose to wear.

Doxa

It resembles the Doxa he picked for his fictional adventurer alter-ego, promotes his beloved conservation group and is far more capable than the previous two watches.

This is the ultimate Doxa for fans of Cussler and the brand. If you can land one of the 95-piece limited edition series, the only issue will be whether to rock it on the orange NATO strap or the steel “beads-of-rice” with dive extension. I really can’t decide.

Availability and pricing

The Doxa SUB 750T Clive Cussler is available now from Doxa for $2,990.

It is a limited edition of 94 pieces, in celebration of what would have been Cussler’s 94th birthday.
