In 2024, we boldly proposed that the Christopher Ward Trident Luminère was the best new dive watch of the year.

The innovative dial design from the adventurous British watchmaker significantly amplified the low-light visibility of the existing, much-adored Trident without disrupting its look.

Nearly a year later, Christopher Ward has doubled down on the Trident Lumère’s definitive feature, an ultra-vibrant dial color cheekily called Submarine Yellow.

Not only does the always-sunny dial gleam in the daylight, it also reacts to the light emitted from the indices and hands in low light, creating the appearance that it is also glowing.

Just as with previous references, this new Trident Lumière has a titanium case and can be purchased with either a matching titanium three-link bracelet or a rubber strap with a folding clasp and luminescent edges.

So we sailed up to the sun

Whether or not you agree that the Trident Lumière was the best new dive watch of 2024, it unquestionably has the highest legibility. According to Christopher Ward, the Lumière’s dial glows twice as bright as the standard Trident, which is already impressively luminous.

Developed in partnership with a brand called Xenoprint, the hands, hour markers and dial logo are sculpted from a ceramic that contains Super-LumiNova called Globolight.

It allows for a three-dimensional application of a technology almost always used two-dimensionally.

This limited edition Submarine Yellow dial amplifies the glow of the Globolight using the same physics behind high-visibility running, cycling and work gear.

Simply put, some colors reflect more light than they absorb, and Submarine Yellow is certainly one of them. It also creates an unmistakable presence in the daylight.

In a land of submarines

The Trident Lumière isn’t all flash. It is one of the most impressive dive watches in the $2,000 price range, thanks to a titanium case, screw down crown and exhibition case back.

All the edges on the case and the matching titanium bracelet are chamfered, eliminating snag and scratch points. It is equipped with a helium release valve, which is the indicating feature of a genuinely professional-grade dive watch.

Most impressive, especially considering the price, is the Sellita caliber SW300-1 movement. The esteemed Swiss movement manufacturer creates different levels of most movements, and Christopher Ward splurged on the highest grade of the SW300-1, which is the only one that comes with a COCS certification.

Few watch companies are more generous to their fans than Christopher Ward, and this limited edition Trident Lumière, with only 300 pieces, is a real gift to them and to dive watches in general.

It amplifies the performance of an already extreme performing dive watch while still maintaining the classic mid-century aesthetic that fans of the aquatic category adore. The relatively minimal production run means it will surely become highly coveted on the resale market in the not-so-distant future.

Availability and pricing

The Christopher Ward Trident Luminère in Submarine Yellow is now available for preorder. It costs $2,390 on a titanium bracelet and $2,015 on a rubber strap with a folding clasp.

With the extremely limited production run of 300 pieces, which the brand cheekily claims is a mistake, this watch will likely sell out before the presale wraps up at the end of June.
