Most G-Shock watches offer excellent value. Stupid tough, highly legible, incredibly useful, sometimes colorful and often on sale — no collection is complete without at least one G-Shock, if not dozens.

So while we’re on the subject, allow me to introduce you to the GD-010, the latest series to join G-Shock’s sprawling catalog. It’s simple, it’s rugged, it’s downright affordable. The GD-010 clocks in at less than $100, making it a contender for the brand’s best affordable beater.

G-Shock GD-010

To be clear, the GD-010 doesn’t break new ground. But when the foundation is this solid, does it really need to?

The watch comes in three colors — black (GD-010-1), green (GD-010-3) and orange with an inverted display (GD-010-4) — and nails all the key specs, including a world time and whopping 10-year battery life in lieu of solar.

It also boasts a large large LCD display for maximum legibility, giving it a look somewhat reminiscent of the Casio AE-1500, albeit with a considerably more rugged case.

Speaking of which: the G-Shock design team certainly took an aggressive line here, giving the GD-010 sharp, angular bumpers to safeguard both the buttons and glass.

A carbon fiber-reinforced housing adds further protection, while bio-based resin keeps the environmental impact in check. It measures 54.9 by 51.9 by 16.1 mm.

Pricing and availability

The GD-010 has been floating around the internet for a few months, having first been leaked by the Ukranian website Casioblog.

However, the wait is now over. The watch is finally available for purchase in the US for perhaps its number-one attribute: a modest asking price of $99.

It joins G-Shock’s catalog with another watch, the GA-010, which takes the same basic principles but adds an analog display and a couple of unique colorways for a small upcharge.
