Within a couple of weeks, 2024 will be over, and it will be time to reflect on all that’s happened over the past year in the world of watches.

Although the year hasn’t quite ended yet, I think it’s safe to say that one of the industry’s hottest trends in 2024 — if not the hottest — has been the triumphant return of natural stone dials.

The trend began in earnest last year in the luxury space, with Rolex, Audemars Piguet, and Girard-Perregaux all launching new references featuring the types of exotic stone dials that were popular half a century ago. The high-end trend continued into this year, with watches like the $55,000+ stone-dial Mirage from newcomer Berneron drawing significant buzz.

But over the course of the year, a funny thing happened: stone dials became democratized. At seemingly record-breaking speed, a luxury watch trend found its way to the affordable market — and in an uncompromised form, no less. Brands like Baltic and Zodiac started throwing exotic natural stone dials on watches regular people can afford, and now Bulova has joined the party with its own unique trio of trendy stone-dial watches.

Everybody must get stoned

Bulova’s stone dials are the result of its second collab with Complecto, a New York-based organization that aims to increase watch enthusiasm in underrepresented communities by helping brands reach more diverse audiences.

The collab consists of three new references of Bulova’s Super Seville, itself a new release that debuted only a few months ago. The Super Seville is already a very cool watch oozing with retro style thanks to its combination of an integrated bracelet with a fluted bezel and cyclops date window. The watch also features Bulova’s superb Precisionist quartz movement that beats at a whopping 262 kHz, giving the watch’s seconds hand a perfectly smooth sweep.

The stone dials available are a mix of familiar and uncommon. There’s tiger’s eye, which is frequently seen on this new generation of stone-dial watches we’ve been seeing; turquoise, which is quite a bit rarer than tiger’s eye but not unheard of; and finally there’s snowflake obsidian, which I’ve only ever seen on a couple of very rare and expensive vintage pieces.

Each dial is paired with a different case and bracelet. The turquoise, which boasts its natural veined appearance, is the most versatile in plain stainless steel. The tiger’s eye goes for full 1970s vibes with a yellow-gold-tone case and bracelet. Finally, the snowflake obsidian further differentiates itself with a rose-gold-tone outfit.

Pricing and Availability

The pairing of the stone dials with the Super Seville’s retro-glam aesthetic has made this release one of my favorite examples of the trend. I think all three references look simultaneously gorgeous and cool — a fine line to walk — and the added benefit of each individual watch technically being one-of-a-kind thanks to the dials being made from natural patterned materials only serves to sweeten the pot.

In addition to being on-trend, the decision by Bulova and Complecto to use stone dials was actually made because of their aforementioned individuality. This collab is a tribute to New York City — where both companies are based — and the many diverse individuals that call it home; each with their own unique story.

The three styles all come in at different price points based on the stone used, but all are decidedly affordable. The most affordable is the turquoise at $1,095, followed by the snowflake obsidian at $1,195. The luxe-looking tiger’s eye tops out the collection at $1,295.

All three are available now from Bulova, with each color limited to 718 examples — a nod to the area code used in the outer boroughs of NYC.
