I’ve Never Seen a Field Watch Quite Like This Before

It’s certainly stretching the definition of a field watch (in a good way).

Field watches are the modern-day descendants of the trench watches worn by soldiers during the First World War. As such, they tend to be more rudimentary and simplistic than other watch styles.

Most field watches are highly legible with relatively bland styling, a carryover from the style’s utilitarian origins. A black dial with white Arabic numeral indices is the most classic and common arrangement, with the more daring examples featuring a dark green or (gasp!) white dial.

But field watches don’t have to be boring. As long as a watch meets the criteria of being a rugged tool watch with high visibility, a sterile bezel, some water and shock resistance, and an uncluttered dial without excessive complications, people will probably call it a field watch. That still leaves room to be creative, particularly when it comes to color.

Bremont knows this, as the brand has just launched a watch that looks unlike any field watch I’ve seen before thanks to its pale pink dial.

Pink Is In

2024 has been a big year for pink watches. Back in May, I declared it the year of the pink watch on the back of releases like Tudor’s Black Bay Chrono Pink and Grand Seiko’s Pink Snowflake, and the evidence has only grown since then. Just last week, TAG Heuer unveiled a pink and black Monaco, and now Bremont comes along with its Terra Nova 38 ‘Pink.’

The new model is a limited-edition version of the Terra Nova 38 field watch introduced at Watches & Wonders earlier this year, the watch that is perhaps the most symbolic of Bremont’s new brand direction. With its exquisitely finished cushion case, oversized crown, fancy bullet bracelet and huge Arabic indices cut from solid blocks of Super-LumiNova, the Terra Nova already stood out in the crowded field of its genre.

Now, by adding a pink dial, Bremont has truly created a field watch that looks like nothing else out there. And there’s no pussyfooting around this dial by calling it salmon or coral or whatever. This dial is pink pink, and I commend Bremont for leaning into the color by calling it such.

The pink dial combined with the Terra Nova’s other unique features, like the bullet bracelet, creates a highly unorthodox field watch.

The dial’s pastel color contrasts really well with those aforementioned lume-block indices, and I’m glad Bremont went with the stark-white version of the lume here instead of the fauxtina style that appears on most iterations of the Terra Nova. It looks super clean and attractive.

Outside of the pretty dial color, this is the same watch as other examples of the Terra Nova 38. That means it’s made of hard-wearing 904L stainless steel, features a quick-release mechanism on the bracelet, boasts 100m of water resistance and is powered by a modified Sellita SW200 automatic movement.

Unfortunately, it also means there’s no seconds hand. Why Bremont chose to omit this feature from the Terra Nova 38 is beyond me (it’s present on larger watches in the line). It’s not a dress watch, and field watches should always have some sort of indicator on the dial so the wearer knows the watch is running at a glance. Hopefully, a seconds hand will be added to the line eventually.

Pricing and Availability

This is the first time Bremont has ever launched a watch with a pink dial in its 20+ year history, and I think it shows how the brand is perhaps more willing to take risks under the direction of new CEO Davide Cerrato. Bremont’s rebrand has been controversial, to say the least, and I’m sure some of the old Bremont’s most devoted fans will abhor this release.

Personally, I think it looks fantastic. It’s certainly unusual for a field watch, but I think the point of the Terra Nova line is to reimagine what a field watch can be. This is just the most extreme version of that we’ve seen so far, and I look forward to seeing future iterations.

The Bremont Terra Nova 38 ‘Pink’ is limited to just 250 pieces and is priced at $3,450, a $100 premium over the non-limited, non-pink version.
