Every year since 1839, the world’s best rowing athletes have gathered on a stretch of the Thames River near Oxford University for the Henley Royal Regatta.

Considered the most precious rowing competition, even rivaling the Olympics, it pits college and club teams against each other with the sport’s greatest glory on the line.

Bremont

As a proudly British watch company, Bremont is a fitting choice for the official timekeeper of the exceptionally English event. To mark the start of the partnership, a gorgeous dive watch with a classic aesthetic and a dual-signed dial was created.

Bremont’s characteristically overt high-performance design has been toned down for this special Supermarine 300m. It sports a timeless white dial with silver accents and a rich blue dive bezel.

The tastefully clean dial has the Bremont logo in its usual spot and the Henley Royal Regatta crest at six o’clock, both simply stamped in black. It is a dive watch endowed with all of the grace and capability worthy of the event it represents.

From the Temple to the bridge

The Henley Royal Regatta encompasses 26 events, each named for the trophy cup claimed by the winner. Most race formats overlap with the Olympic rowing competitions, and the most celebrated is the Grand Challenge Cup, which dates back to the event’s founding.

Races are categorized by the number of participants, whether or not there is a coxswain, age and gender. But they all follow the same course, which runs “about one mile and 550 yards” upstream from Temple Island to Henley Bridge.

Contestants come from all over the world, but predominantly represent English, Eastern European and American schools and clubs. Some of the top American competitors are the teams from Ivy League schools such as Princeton, Columbia and Harvard.

Famously documented by Jack Carlson in the book Rowing Blazers, which spawned the clothing label of the same name, rowing culture has a fashion ethos dating back to the sport’s Victorian-era roots. The Henley, as it is known, doubles as a showcase for team regalia.

A prized watch

The Supermarine 300M is Bremont’s marquee dive watch. The base model has a 40mm 904L stainless steel case with a screw-down crown, domed anti-reflective sapphire crystal and a screw-in case back.

The typically tactical and busy dial and bezel have been simplified for a classical look with a clean white dial background and a blue anodized aluminum bezel. The applied hour markers and hands are polished nickel-plated and filled with white Super-LumiNova that glows blue.

Bremont designed a rounded H-link steel bracelet for the Supermarine 300m, with brushed side and end links that match the case and contrasting polished middle links.

Creating an official watch for such a style-conscious and culturally significant event was a daunting challenge, and Bremont nailed it. The Supermarine 300M was the obvious choice, but it needed some refinement to fit the bill.

The resulting watch is Bremont’s best-looking design in years. It doesn’t try too hard to look tactical with performative details, but it is still a high-performance dive watch.

Of course, Bremont limited the production to only 50 pieces, because a watch this nice, tied to an event this prestigious, has to be rare. With a classic dual-signed dial, this one will become a highly coveted collector’s piece as soon as it sells out.
