Did an Unexpected Brand Make the Year’s Best-Looking Chronograph?

Breitling’s collab with a soccer star yielded some surprisingly attractive results.

Most big watch brands have professional athlete ambassadors. Sometimes, these partnerships feel like missed opportunities, while other times, they result in astoundingly cool watches, such as Rafa Nadal’s various collaborations with Richard Mille.

Breitling’s new collection with Norwegian soccer star Erling Haaland falls into the latter camp.

The Manchester City striker has been on Breitling’s payroll for a couple of years now, and now he has worked with the brand to release a signature collection of Chronomat watches that look absolutely fantastic — including what just might be the best-looking chronograph from any brand so far this year.

Breaking New Ground at Breitling

The collection consists of a Chronomat B01 42 Chronograph and a Chronomat Automatic GMT 40. The Chronograph is crafted from solid 18k red gold, while the GMT is in stainless steel with a platinum bezel. Both models are available on either a Rouleaux bracelet matching the case material or a black rubber strap of the same design.

What unites the collection is its dials, as they’re made from a slice of the Muonionalusta meteorite. I was shocked to learn this is the first time Breitling has released a watch with a meteorite dial — Rolex and Omega have been doing so for years — but it seems like the brand was just waiting for the right moment.

The Muonionalusta meteorite is the world’s oldest known meteorite at 4.5 billion years old, and was discovered in Scandinavia, Haaland’s home region. In addition to the Scandi connection, Breitling also ties the material to Haaland’s “otherworldly skills.” That’s perhaps a tenuous connection, but the fact remains that these are damn good-looking watches, especially the chronograph.

The Chrono utilizes black chronograph registers to create a gray panda dial in combination with the meteorite, with the inner tachymeter scale also in black. The red gold seen on the rest of the watch proves the perfect complement to the black-and-gray color scheme of the dial, and I really love the way this thing looks.

Thankfully, Breitling kept the Haaland branding pretty subtle on both watches here. The star’s name and number appear engraved on the caseback next to the limited-edition number, while his “EH” initials replace the Chronomat’s usual “B” as the counterweight of the seconds hand.

The Chronograph gets a display caseback showing off the excellent B01 manufacture movement — an automatic column-wheel chronograph with a 70-hour power reserve — while the GMT gets a closed caseback featuring an engraving of Haaland in his iconic goal-celebration pose.

The option of the black rubber strap better balances out the look of the very gray GMT — that’s the combo I would go for.

Speaking of the GMT, its platinum bezel and red gold GMT hand — along with the meteorite dial, of course — add a big dose of luxury to an already luxurious steel sports watch. The gray meteorite dial features a black inner 24-hour bezel for a bit of contrast, but otherwise this is a very monochromatic affair — especially if you opt for the bracelet over the black rubber strap.

Pricing and Availability

Although the Navitimer remains Breitling’s flagship watch, the Chronomat has quietly become the brand’s most versatile player. It’s the glue that holds the brand together; Breitling’s Phil Hartman, if you will.

Both the Chronograph and GMT are attractive, mass-appealing, robust sports watches that have proven to be versatile canvases for those times when Breitling wants to get creative, such as with this new release or with last year’s NFL collab.

These Haaland editions might be the best-looking Chronomats we’ve seen so far. The Chronograph is limited to 250 pieces and is priced at $26,600 on the strap or an eye-popping $47,100 on the bracelet (hey, it’s a lot of gold). The GMT is considerably more attainable, even with the platinum bezel. It’s priced at $10,000 on the strap or $10,350 on the bracelet. All four can be purchased from Breitling’s online boutique.
