India may not have a thriving watch industry, but it does have some of the most beautiful natural landscapes on the planet.

Both facts motivated Bangalore Watch Company, a young brand in Bangalore, India, to create a beautiful and functional field watch that stands out in a very formulaic category.

According to the brand, the Peninsula Professional is designed as a weekend companion for hiking, camping, or posting up at a local watering hole. It blends form and function to work as a field watch, dive watch and dress watch.

If Bangalore Watch Co.’s goal was to turn heads, that explains my neck ache—I can’t stop looking at this watch.

Apart from the crowd

It is an impressive feat for any watchmaker, especially a tiny, seven-year-old brand located well outside of established markets, to design a watch that feels original and classic at the same time.

Bangalore Watch Co. skipped the military issue formula established in the early twentieth century, which has dominated field watch designs ever since. Instead, dial elements were borrowed from vintage dive watches, and the case resembles a pocket watch more than a wristwatch.

The alternating geometric applied hour markers resemble dive watches from the 1960s, which has always been my preferred choice in dial markers. To help convert the format to a field watch, the three o’clock and nine o’clock dash indices are etched with a stream and pine tree, respectively.

The obelisk-shaped hour and minute hands match the diver-inspired hour markers, but the lollypop second-hand is typical of field watches from the mid-twentieth century. As are the script “Peninsula” dial marking and small date window at six o’clock.

What stands out the most about the Peninsula Professional is the case shape, which resembles a pocket watch. This rounded-off, no-lug design has appeared in dive watches before but is novel to the field watch category.

I love how the perfectly rounded shape makes the 44-millimeter case size feel smaller than it measures. By shortening the distance between strap ends, it wears more like a 38-millimeter watch.

Rugged performance

Despite an artistic, streamlined look, the Peninsula Professional is built to handle the great outdoors. The case is built from 316L stainless steel and is topped with domed sapphire glass that completes the rounded silhouette.

Since the case sits fully on top of the wrist, the large, boldly marked dial is clearly visible at arm’s length and in dark conditions. The completely rounded-off design, aside from the crown, minimized snagging.

It runs on a Selitta caliber SW200-1 automatic movement, which I love to see in any watch brand that doesn’t make in-house movements. It is not only super reliable, but parts are easy to access, and any watchmaker worth your money will know it well.

The screw-down crown is large and knurled for easy use in the field. However, this is a good place to remind everyone that you should never adjust your watch while it is on your wrist, for the risk of bending the crown stem.

Each of the three regular production references and the one limited edition are named after some of India’s most beautiful locations. The green dial is named Agumbe after the lush green mountain ranges in the west.

The blue dial is named Laccadive after the beaches along the Arabian Sea. The white dial is named Zanskar after a valley in the Himalayas. The pearly dark blue limited edition model is named Mannar after an area famous for oyster pearl harvesting.

Why I’m obsessed

I’m completely obsessed with the Peninsula Professional because it embodies everything that has made field watches so popular for nearly a century. It blends rugged capability with classical looks, so you never have to take it off, no matter what you’re wearing or doing.

Better still, it does so in a novel and refreshing way. By blending favored design elements from vintage watches in a unique way and adding those beautifully engraved hour markers as a signature touch, Bangalore Watch Co. has created something truly original with mass appeal.
