It’s a real head-turner for around $600.

French microbrand Baltic consistently shows up in rankings of the best affordable watch brands on the market, and after recently checking out the brand’s handiwork in the metal for the first time at Windup New York, I see what all the fuss is about.

The brand’s styles are drop-dead gorgeous and its finishing and execution both feel elevated for the price point. After playing it safe with its early vintage-inspired pieces like now-iconic Aquascaphe and Bicompax, lately the brand has flexed its creative muscles with weirder releases like the difficult-to-categorize Prismic and micro-rotor-powered MR.

But perhaps Baltic’s most unique watch — and one of its best — is the Hermétique Tourer. Ostensibly a field watch, it looks like no other watch in its category with its bold floating markers made of solid lume, its integrated crown, and the polished steel “blades” encircling its multi-layered dial. First released in stainless steel last year, the Hermétique quickly stood out in a sea of same-same field watches.

Now, a year later, Baltic has introduced a new model to the Hermétique line that makes the quirky field watch feel even more original.

Bronze Age

The Hermétique has officially entered its Bronze Age.

Baltic has rolled out three new versions of the contemporary field watch in blue, green and brown, each with a 37mm case made of bronze CuAl8 (a copper-aluminum alloy).

The material looks shiny and golden at first, but like all bronze watches, it will begin to develop a patina almost immediately, creating an aged appearance that’s unique to each individual watch.

The dial of the Hermétique Tourer Bronze has also received some updates over the steel version. The hands are now in polished bronze, as are the distinctive “blades” that separate the railroad minute track from the main portion of the dial, which sits a bit lower for added depth.

The dial also has a new finish that matches perfectly with the new case material. Whether you choose green, blue or brown, each dial is now smoked so it appears darker at the edges and lighter at the center.

These sorts of ombré dials always seem to pair well with bronze, especially once the material patinas, as they add to the aged vibe. In this application, it looks absolutely superb.

Even with the change in case material, my favorite aspect of the Hermétique is the indices made from solid blocks of Super-LumiNova.

Strap-wise, you’re limited to a quick-release Tropic rubber strap in a variety of colors — there’s no bracelet option like there is on the steel version.

Outside of those changes, this is the exact same watch as before. The distinctive solid Super-LumiNova indices that float over portions of the dial, the integrated crown, the massive domed sapphire crystal and the Miyota 9039 automatic movement all remain unchanged.

Pricing and Availability

With the change in material and the extra attention paid to the dial, the Hermétique Tourer Bronze is understandably slightly more expensive than the stainless steel version of the watch. But don’t worry, it’s still stupid affordable.

Whereas the steel version of the tool watch has an SRP of €550 (~$578), the new bronze version is priced at €600 (~$630). To get a watch this gorgeous, distinct and capable (did I mention water resistance is 150m?) for several hundred dollars less than a grand almost feels like stealing.

The Hermétique Tourer Bronze is available now from Baltic.
