Editor’s Note: Watches & Wonders (formerly SIHH) has moved online and Baselworld 2020 is canceled, but that hasn’t stopped watch brands large and small from debuting their new wares. Stay on top of this year’s best new watch releases here.
The luxury-lifestyle sport watch concept was pioneered by the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak in the 1970s, but today more high-end brands are embracing it than ever. The new Tonda GT collection is Swiss watchmaker Parmigiani‘s take on the genre — a sporty interpretation of its established Tonda collection with an expectedly high-level horology inside.
Two new models introduce this more casual side of Parmigiani: The Tonda GT ($13,500 in steel on a rubber strap, $14,500 on a bracelet; $24,900 in rose gold on rubber or $49,500 with a matching gold bracelet) is relatively simple, with only three-hand time telling and a digital date display. More complicated is the Tondagraph GT ($18,500 in steel on rubber; $19,500 in steel on a bracelet), which features a chronograph and annual calendar — an uncommon but practical combination of complications. Both share beefed-up indices, fluted bezels, and dials with “clou triangulaire guilloché” patterns for better legibility.
Most importantly, these watches offer a more casual, daily wear experience of the Parmigiani brand with 100m of water resistance, screw-down crowns and metal bracelets or rubber straps. Visible through the case backs are automatic movements produced entirely in-house at Parmigiani and finished to the highest standards. Steel models are limited to 250 examples each, while the rose gold Tonagraph GT is limited to 150 pieces.
