In an interesting example of how different businesses are adapting to social distancing, the Horological Society of New York (HSNY) is offering some of its watchmaking classes online. For those stuck in quarantine with some curiosity about how mechanical watches work, now might be the time to take a dive down the rabbit hole.

The online group classes focus on the theoretical side of different aspects of watchmaking — so there are no tools or prior experience necessary. The first course, Basic Movement Theory, is free with a yearly membership to the HSNY, which costs $100 and includes other benefits that watch fans are sure to enjoy. Subsequent courses delve into more specific topics and each carries a suggested donation of $100. There’s also more advanced one-on-one tutoring available for specialized skills.

Just as the instructors themselves are based in different locations, the Society’s online courses give anyone in the world the opportunity to get the world-class horological education of the HSNY from wherever they might be located.
