Editor’s Note: Watches & Wonders (formerly SIHH) has moved online and Baselworld 2020 is canceled, but that hasn’t stopped watch brands large and small from debuting their new wares. Stay on top of this year’s best new watch releases here.
A maker of little red wagons isn’t the most obvious partner for a collaboration watch. But if conjuring nostalgic images of childhood summers in an idyllic America is the idea, the new Shinola x Radio Flyer Detrola watch seems an effective medium through which to do it. The brand’s often ironic attitude is just right for a playful and affordable, summer-ready watch for adults that, we have to admit, is pretty handsome in and of itself.
When you hear “little red wagon,” it’s likely the Radio Flyer that pops into your head, even for those who know it only from movies or via other cultural references. Based in Chicago, the wagon company has been going strong for over 100 years. The Shinola Radio Flyer watch has a 43mm wide case (hence: for adults) in TR90 resin (plastic), like the rest of the Detrola collection. The case is in black with a strap in the iconic (fire-engine?) red of the wagon.
The white dial also features highlights in red, including the Radio Flyer logo, which is a kid riding the wagon. The watch is powered by a quartz movement, further protected by a steel core within the resin case. This Shinola Detrola watch will be limited to only 370 units, with a price of $395 each.
