Editor’s Note: Watches & Wonders (formerly SIHH) has moved online and Baselworld 2020 is canceled, but that hasn’t stopped watch brands large and small from debuting their new wares. Stay on top of this year’s best new watch releases here.
Dive watches are great for scuba diving, but everyone knows they have another important function for many people: that is, acting as a style statement. Seiko’s most serious and technical looking dive watches happen to fit well with urban fashion, which the brand has leaned into with their Street Series. Now, building on its lineup are four new models, including two from the “Arnie” series, which is getting the Street treatment for the first time.
That treatment means a use of colors that might otherwise feel superfluous to these beefy dive watches’ “pure tool” essence. Seiko, however, makes the color scheme work with muted tones and lots of contrast — you could totally still take them diving with their 200m of water resistance. The dive watch nicknamed the “Tuna” for its tin-can-like outer shroud has been the model of choice for Street Series watches until now, and two more such models (SRPE29 and SRPE31) now offer tan and gray “Urban Safari” colorways. The Arnie models (SNJ029 and SNJ031) use tan and green, respectively.
While the new Arnie watches are part of the brand’s Prospex Solar collection, the new Tuna versions now offer the Street look with automatic movements. In addition, while both the Tuna and Arnie watches have often had dot indices and pointy hands in previous versions, these new models are visually differentiated with blocky designs that seem to reference the brand’s popular vintage dive watches. The two Arnie models available in the US in fall 2020 for a price of $550, while the Tuna models will cost roughly $630.
