These Are the Watches We’re Obsessing Over in March 2020

As watch lovers, we spend our afternoons poring over watches both new and vintage. When a new timepiece comes across our radar, one that particularly resonates with our tastes, we can’t help but obsess over it. So, here’s a taste of that process — five timepieces (and one strap) that our watch-loving staff are obsessing over right at this very moment.

Grand Seiko SBGW258

It’s exceedingly rare that a new watch release catches my attention quite like this Grand Seiko. And it makes sense, as this SBGW258 is a recreation of the first Grand Seiko from 1960. Shinola The Spartan Detrola 43MM

As Michigan State and Shinola fan, this watch marries two categories of my personal brand: sports, and style. Also, it’s my favorite color of all time, Spartan Green (PMS 567). But in all honesty, I would only wear this watch to relish in the hatred from my fellow University of Michigan loving co-worker, Henry Phillips. With Father’s Day just around the corner, I suspect my father would find the same joy in telling my brother (and an OSU alum) that he now has this watch. –Joe Tornatzky, Creative Director

I had one of these once. Not this exact watch, but the same model. I think I paid $400 for it on eBay. Sure, at 34mm, it was a bit small — I would’ve preferred 36 or 37mm — but who could argue with the price, and that dial…damn. Seiko Prospex 1965 Diver Recreation SPB149

I’m a sucker for Seiko, it’s true. When they made a modern reinterpretation of the famous 62MAS dive watch before, it was a decent-enough-looking watch — but this time around, Seiko’s really done it right: right size, right specs, right mix of retro and contemporary, and right price. (Oh, so right.) A 40.5mm-wide and relatively thin 13.2mm-thick dive watch sounds just about perfect, and the design feels balanced and refined. Tudor Black Bay GMT

I’ve been subtracting by three a lot in the past couple of weeks. With a brother in San Francisco, my parents and grandmother in the Sacramento Valley and a sister- and brother-in-law in Seattle, the little bit of arithmetic has always been necessary but never as quite as frequently employed as it’s been this month. Wearing that particular time difference on my wrist has always struck me as appealing, and now especially so. A reminder of family far away and the consistent beating of mechanical movement, indifferent to the outside world, are together a strong tonic for an uncertain time. –J.D. Apple Sports Watch Strap with 44mm Peacock Leather Loop

I wear the same watch every single day — it’s an Apple watch and I’m pretty dependent on it. And keeping in line with my tendency to wear the same thing every day, I rarely change my strap, even though I know I have options. Apple’s latest drop of watch straps finally has me convinced I need to start swapping.
