Last year, we reported on a new Croatian watch company called Marnaut and their Dark Surge diver. Launched on Kickstarter, the Dark Surge featured an interesting dial inspired by the body of a sea urchin, featuring multiple small loom plots in concentric circles. Following the successful launch of their first product, Marnaut has developed a new project called the Seascape, a diver based on the super compressor-style case.
The super compressor is a case style, rather than a specific watch from a specific company, and numerous references from myriad brands have been made to fit in its mold — mostly in the 1960s. However, several companies, from behemoths such as Longines to microbrands such as Marnaut, have been reviving this beloved style lately, and the Seascape is the latest.
Available in three versions with white or black dials in steel cases or a black dial in a black PVD case, the Seascape is a super compressor-style diver with a 40mm diameter and 20mm lug width, 200m of water resistance, a scratch-proof, double-domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating and an inner rotating dive bezel. It’s powered by the Miyota 9015 movement with 24 jewels and 42-hour power reserve, and comes with two straps: one rubber and one Italian leather croc-pattern.
The real standout feature of the Seascape, however, is the dial. With 34 index markers with Super-LumiNova coating over an enamel finish, the dial is Marnaut’s signature feature, inspired by a sea urchin’s body. A striking and handsome design, it’s different enough to stand out from the sea of microbrand watches and offers a novel look for not a lot of money.
Speaking of pricing, for roughly $279 you can get either the white- or black-dial steel version of the Seascape with two strap and microfiber travel pouch, or for approximately $300, the black PVD version — a pretty great deal for a handsome, automatic diver with a unique design.
