The newest automatic watch in Detroit-based Shinola’s ever expanding lineup features the brand’s first bronze case. Joining a collection of steel dive watches otherwise named after the Great Lakes, the new Monster stands out for its sober black dial and use of the case material that’s popular for developing unique patinas. A handsome, traditionally styled diver, you might not know from looking at it that the Monster’s design took inspiration from prohibition-era smugglers in Detroit.
In a 43mm case with 300m of water resistance housing a Sellita SW 200 automatic movement, bronze is a new watchmaking material for Shinola, but relatively common in the wider industry. More than a trend, bronze now looks like an established material that brands can use to mix up their collections, and it’s always fun to see a brand’s interpretation of it. As bronze is still a relatively premium material, the Bronze Monster costs about $200 more than its steel counterparts at $1,650.
