Baltic, a microbrand based in France, launched in early 2017 to incredible fanfare. Since then, their Aquascaphe dive watch has made waves in the boutique watch community with its classic, midcentury vibes, affordable modern automatic movement and unbeatable price of less than $700.
Now the brand is auctioning off a unique iteration of the Aquascaphe made for the crew of The Vortex Swim, a project led by long-distance swimmer Benoit Lecomte. Lecompte recently swam 300 nautical miles through the Great Pacific Garbage Patch from Hawaii to San Francisco to help raise awareness of micro-plastics in the world’s oceans.
Collecting plastic debris and data along the way, Lecompte was the first person to cross the Garbage Patch by swimming, which he did for 8 hours a day for 3 months. Strapped to his wrist was a special version of Baltic’s Aquascaphe with the Vortex Swim logo adorning the dial, which will be auctioned on Baltic’s site from November 4th through 11th. The proceeds from the sale will go entirely to @thevortexswim in order to help fund further expeditions with the aim of raising awareness about micro-plastic pollution in the oceans.
