American retailer Macy’s and historically American watchmaker Bulova have teamed up to recreate a classic, midcentury dress watch. The American Clipper name has been associated with a range of different-looking watches over the years, but this one takes the form of a model from the 1950s, and it was created especially for Macy’s. The new Bulova x Macy’s American Clipper, a limited-edition collaboration piece, is vintage-styled with a 39mm case, is powered by an automatic movement, and has a pretty approachable price. Those qualities suggest it will be well-received, and it doesn’t hurt that it’s handsome as well.
The American Clipper comes in two versions: one with a bare steel case and blue dial, the other with a gold-plated case and black dial. Both feature domed crystals and are water resistant to 30m. Hinted at by a very throwback “selfwinding” text on the dial, the automatic movement made by Japanese manufacturer Miyota (also owned by Bulova’s corporate parent, Citizen) is visible through an exhibition caseback window. In steel with a blue dial, the Bulova American Clipper is priced at $395, and the gold and black model is $425. Neither is limited in production numbers but will only be produced and sold for a limited time, available through Macy’s.
