Famed aeronautical watch manufacturer Breitling has updated its Avengers pilots watch collection with more new models than you can shake a stick at. Joining the Aviator 8 and the Navitimer in Breitling’s Air universe of timepieces, the new Avengers collection (the original debuted in 2001) features chronograph, GMT and time-only watches in various diameters and configurations, all featuring in-house Breitling COSC-certified chronometer movements. Ranging from 43mm to 48mm in diameter, these are clearly watches made largely for enormous people with enormous wrists, or people with average-sized wrists who like their watches to hang off the edge of their ulna and smack into their desks every time they go to pick up their coffee.
Breitling, of course, has been making more conservatively sized timepieces of late (thank God), so they can be forgiven (somewhat) for introducing an updated collection of exclusively large-diameter watches. But it does beg the question of what type of human, anatomically, would favor a 48mm watch, and how many of that type of human are out there buying certified chronometers. Surely Stalone has convinced his entire family to proudly sport Panerai, and Schwarzenegger is wearing that old Seiko thing from “Predator.” Brielting Aviation Pioneers Squad member Scott Kelly grew a purported 2 inches or so during his stay on the ISS, but evidently shrunk again upon returning to Earth, so he’s probably reaching for a more conservatively sized 43mm watch these days (a 43mm watch, by the way, is enormous).
Anyway, the new Breitling Avenger watches are available with various strap choices (or a steel bracelet), different dial colors (blue, yellow and green are among the offerings) and each model features a date window, water resistance down to 300m and Super-LumiNova-coated indices and hands.
