With a mission of reducing gun violence, the Swedish brand Triwa is introducing its second watch incorporating metal made from illegal firearms. Triwa aims (as it were) not only to address the proliferation of illegal guns but to call attention to the problem, and the brand focuses on the country of El Salvador where organized crime is a serious problem. The new watches, launching on Kickstarter, are made from melted- down firearms metal which the brand is calling “Humanium.”
The watches themselves have approachable prices and classic, minimalist design, featuring different sizes, finishes, dial colors, and movement options — in total, 19 available options. There are simple three-hand versions and chronographs with quartz movements, as well those using automatic Miyota movements. Most measure 39mm wide, with a couple options at 34mm, and have vertically brushed dials and bare metal or black-coated cases. The crowns are designed to resemble the revolver chamber of a gun.
Triwa’s previous watch involved melting down around 5,000 illegal guns and contributed over $70,000 to local anti-violence initiatives in 2018. The brand says that a respectable 15% of every sale “goes back to the country.” The Triwa 2.0 Kickstarter campaign has just launched, and prices range from $195 for those with a basic quartz movement, a little more for the quartz chronograph at $275 Early Bird pricing, and go up to $525 for the automatic Kickstarter exclusive model. Each will have a higher MSRP after the Kickstarter campaign.
