The Watch World’s “Oscar” Contenders Were Just Announced. Here Are 5 of Our Favorites

Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) are like the Academy Awards of the watch world and include 84 watches up for 18 prizes.

The music world has the Grammys, the film world has the Academy Awards, and the watch world has the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG), which is given an acronym so that Americans can pronounce it.

Yesterday, the pre-selected watches that are up for 18 prizes at the GPHG were announced, including contenders for the Aiguille d’Or Grand Prix, which rewards “contemporary watchmaking excellence.” (84 watches are up for awards in 14 categories, with six finalists in each category.) The GPH jury is international and composed of 30 experts from the horological world, with two rounds of voting conducted via secret ballot, and winners will be announced on Thursday, November 7th 2019, at the 19th GPHG Awards Ceremony in Geneva.
