Squale once made watch cases for world-famous brands such as Blancpain, Doxa and Heuer, but its own timepieces were professional tools watches that gained popularity among divers on their own merit. Sold widely in professional dive shops, these Squale models are still highly sought after by divers and enthusiasts alike. Thankfully, the brand, which nearly disappeared during the Quartz Crisis, was given new life in 2010, and continues to make serious, modern dive watches for the masses at affordable prices.
Squale is celebrating the 60th anniversary of the 30 Atmos model with a special edition that recalls many of the vintage elements of its 1960s-era watches. An edition of just 150 pieces, the 60th Anniversary 30 Atmos features a 40.8mm stainless steel case with a black dial, a sapphire crystal, 300m of water resistance, a screw-down crown, the Sellita SW200 movement, and a sail cloth 2-piece strap.
The dial and bezel are the real standout features here (not to speak of the considerable water resistance from a watch case that, thankfully, isn’t all that thick at 12mm). Fans of vintage Blancpain will no doubt recognize the Bakelite look of the black bezel with white numerals and hashmarks (Squale did supply Blancpain with cases for the Fifty Fathoms, after all), and the dial itself features vintage-style lume, an elegant chapter ring, prominent indices and a handsome 60th anniversary engraving done in a fine cursive font.
A handsome diver and a nice alternative to more conventional modern options, the 60th Anniversary 30 Atmos will debut on September 1, 2019, with a price of approximately $1,218.
